Please join us for a seminar at 3 pm in Room 1044 Tuesday October 20 by Dr. Nicolo Scapin, who is a candidate for our physical oceanography faculty position. The title and abstract of his talk are provided below.
Title: Small-scale processes at the ocean-atmosphere interface: from interfacial transport to wind-wave interactions
Abstract:
Flows involving droplets, bubbles, and deformable free surfaces play a central role in exchanges of mass, momentum, and energy between the ocean and the atmosphere. Although these flows arise across a wide range of scales, they share three fundamental features: they are multiphase, involving more than one fluid phase; multiphysics, involving coupled phenomena such as heat and mass transfer; and multiscale, involving a broad range of interacting spatial and temporal scales. In this talk, I will show how high-fidelity numerical simulations can be used to study these processes and connect small-scale fluid mechanics to larger-scale ocean-atmosphere exchanges. I will first focus on evaporating droplets in turbulence and present an efficient numerical algorithm that overcomes two major challenges in interface-resolved simulations with phase change: the discontinuity of the velocity field across the two-phase interface and the intrinsic local volume variations induced by evaporation. I will then turn to multiscale processes at the ocean-atmosphere interface, focusing on wind-forced breaking waves in a regime relevant to tropical cyclones, and show how wave breaking strongly influences the turbulent airflow, modifies the momentum transfer and drag coefficient, and alters the underwater energy dissipation profile. I will conclude by outlining future research directions aimed at addressing the long-standing question of how sea spray influences air-sea fluxes over complex wave fields, quantifying bubble-mediated transport, and developing data-driven, physically constrained parameterizations of small-scale air-sea processes for ocean and climate models.
