Subject: Physical Oceanography faculty candidate #2 seminar Thursday October 15 at 3pm Room 1044

Please join us for a seminar at 3 pm in Room 1044 Thursday October 15 by Dr. Manuel Gutierrez, who is a candidate for our physical oceanography faculty position. The title and abstract of his talk are provided below.

Thank you.

Observing ocean turbulence across scales: mesoscale–submesoscale interactions

The ocean is a turbulent fluid, full of swirls at every scale. The biggest eddies, the mesoscale, are a few hundred kilometers wide and hold most of the ocean’s energy. They spin up from unstable large-scale currents like the Gulf Stream and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, carry warm and cold water across long distances, and help balance air–sea heat exchange. From a few tens of kilometers down to about one kilometer, the submesoscale takes over. These flows are small enough to escape the constraint of Earth’s rotation, with large vertical velocities (~100 meters/ day), and their strength is controlled by the seasonal changes in the thickness of the mixed layer (the homogeneous layer in contact with the atmosphere). These flows move heat, carbon, nutrients, and pollutants between the surface and the ocean interior, with real consequences for climate and for the biology that depends on those nutrients. As turbulent flows, the two scales interact and transfer energy back and forth, yet the net size and direction of that exchange is still poorly constrained by observations, and we know even less about how it changes through the year. Climate models cannot resolve the submesoscale or its coupling to the mesoscale, so we must parameterize these effects. In this talk, I use a long time series of ocean velocities across the Gulf Stream from the Oleander ship lane to examine how the turbulent energy transfer between mesoscale and submesoscale varies with season, and which physical processes drive it. The seasonal picture provides an observational dataset to benchmark models that only partly resolve these flows and points to better ways to represent mesoscale–submesoscale interactions in future parameterizations.
