Title:
Ice sheet stability across space and time from geophysical investigations of Antarctica
Abstract:
With the remote setting and near complete ice coverage, characterizing the geophysical setting of Antarctica remains a unique challenge. Over the last two decades, a surge in seismic and GPS station deployments have helped to advance our understanding of solid Earth structure in Antarctica. In this talk, I will discuss implications of recent regional-scale investigations of mantle structure for better understanding tectonics and solid Earth – ice sheet interactions in West Antarctica. Strong upper mantle heterogeneity in West Antarctica, consistent with a complex tectonic setting, is found to significantly impact predictions of glacial isostatic adjustment-induced bedrock deformation and local sea level change for modern (past ~100 years) and projected (next ~300 years) ice sheet changes. I will also present results revealing seismic evidence for widespread active magmatism in eastern Marie Byrd Land, a region of West Antarctica that coincides with multiple major glaciers undergoing rapid ice mass loss.
