Title: Moisture Transport, Precipitation, and Snowpack: what global models tell us about the water cycle and how it is changing
Abstract: As the climate is rapidly changing, clouds and precipitation processes account for large uncertainty in predictions of future global and regional climate. They depend on processes that occur over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Earth System Model (ESM) simulations of clouds, precipitation, and how they are changing are very uncertain. My research interrogates such uncertainty, determining which processes must be further constrained to improve ESM predictions of future climate. In this presentation I uncover the greatest uncertainty in ESMs’ ability to predict changes in regional snowpack in the American Mountain West. I will then discuss the atmospheric processes responsible for converging moisture onto the Contiguous United States, and how atmospheric moisture transport is changing in a warming climate. Discussion along the themes of changes in regional snowpack and atmospheric moisture transport will provide an example of how large-scale changes in the water cycle can have regional-scale impacts.
