Residence Times and Characteristic Pathways in the Gulf of Mexico

Description: I am investigating water residence times and characteristic pathways in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) using Lagrangian particle trajectories with advection velocities obtained from a 54-year, free-running HYCOM simulation. This presentation details the methods used and their associated challenges. Results identify the highest-probability pathways across various depths and their corresponding residence times.

Bottom Topography Representation Using Shaved Cells in HYCOM

Description: HYCOM currently represents bottom topography using a staircase approximation composed of discontinuous partial cells fitted to the model grid. Although this method is robust, it imposes geometric and dynamical constraints when representing irregular topography. In this talk, I will present an alternative shaved-cell approach for a more accurate representation of bottom topography, along with comparative results with the MOM6 model to evaluate its effects on numerical accuracy.

Celebrating 20 Years of SAMOS!
