Abstract: Surface turbulent fluxes in hurricanes are important for intensity changes and maintenance of the storm, however these fluxes are poorly observed in tropical cyclones. This project improves the calculations of air-sea turbulent surface fluxes and transfer coefficients in hurricanes determined from dropsondes, specifically focusing on enthalpy. Improvements to these calculations are accomplished through a log-profile analysis of dropsonde data which uses the conjugate-gradient method to solve for the theoretical log-profile parameters which best match observations to the theory. These log-profile parameters are used to determine enthalpy fluxes and enthalpy transfer coefficients (Ck) for each dropsonde, many of which are rejected through our improved quality control. We find that variability in Ck is largely due to variability in the latent heat flux, with a much smaller dependence on the air-sea temperature difference. Our drag coefficient and enthalpy coefficients are both shown to be good matches to some prior work, but substantially different from some prior studies. Our analyses point to a likely cause for some of these differences being different atmospheric moisture conditions, and hint that additional physical processes might influence field observations, but not be seen in laboratory observations. However, our dropsonde data cannot be used to conclusively determine if additional physical processes come into play in tropical cyclone environments nor to identify those processes.

Adea
