Revisiting ENSO Teleconnections
By Carolyn Emerson
Description: The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a dominant contributor to interannual climate variability. However, it has been increasingly found that many ENSO teleconnections, especially those involving precipitation, are failing a more robust statistical test called the Benjamini-Hochberg (BH) test. Even in teleconnections that pass the BH test, there are still variations in those patterns between different re-analyses. We hypothesize that these differences are likely caused by variations in the datasets in time scales shorter and longer than those in which ENSO exists. Extending that, we predict that if we isolate only the interannual and seasonal variations, then teleconnections between datasets will be more similar. This work tests the robustness of ENSO teleconnections by using the BH test and investigates the differences in ENSO teleconnections between datasets.
Evaluating Depth-Averaged Salinity Transport Driven by Mesoscale Eddies in the GOM using HYCOM 1/25th Degree Datay
By Matt Weiberg
Description: Mesoscale eddies in the Gulf of Mexico have been widely documented, yet comparatively there is limited research on how these eddies transport salinity from the Gulf Stream into the basin and drive westward redistribution. Using 1/25th degree HYCOM reanalysis data, I look to examine the salinity structure through depth-averaged values as well as fixed-longitude, latitudinal cross sections to quantity both zonal and vertical transport pathways. Additional analyses evaluate how eddy activity modulates mixed layer depth and how seasonal shifts in stratification influence MDL variability in the GOM.
NOTE: Please feel free to forward/share this invitation with other groups/disciplines that might be interested in this talk/topic. All are welcome to attend.
