Wind and Wave Power Generation in the Caribbean

Description: The vast shoreline and growing electrical demand of Caribbean nations presents benefit and opportunity for the region to integrate offshore energy sources. Despite generally stable atmospheric conditions and low wind speeds, modern energy technology could have the potential to produce economically viable amounts of power, particularly under the influence of the Caribbean Low-Level Jet. This research investigates the available wind and wave power resource in the Caribbean Sea, using specifications for state-of-the-art designs of offshore wind turbines and oscillating point absorbers.

Nudging Tides in HYCOM

Description:  HYCOM was the first realistic 3-D global ocean model to include tides, but they are now routinely available in OGCM's. If the Antarctic ice shelves are included, several ocean models can now achieve a global deep water M2 RMS error vs TPXO10atlas of 4 cm, although the Atlantic error is still high at 7 cm. HYCOM introduced an augmented state ensemble Kalman Filter (ASEnKF) body force correction that reduces the tidal error to 3 cm globally and 4 cm in the Atlantic. This is what is used in the US Navy ESPC-V-D02 nowcast forecast system. Recently, NEMO and MITgcm have added a tidal nudging capability that can significantly improve the accuracy of tides. This is now available in HYCOM, and its performance will be explored using a set of twin global simulations.
