Description: This study has investigated the variability of air-sea heat flux in the Southern Ocean on multiple temporal scales, ranging from interannual to seasonal and diurnal, using >13 years' (March 2010 to May 2023; with gaps) data from the Southern Ocean Flux Station (SOFS) moorings. Currently, SOFS is the only operational moored buoy in the Southern Ocean (anchored at ~ 47°S and 142°E). SOFS is able to provide climate quality meteorological and marine observations, enabling air-sea heat flux determination. Before being analyzed, the quality of SOFS air-sea heat flux data has been carefully evaluated through comparisons between overlapping moorings and between moorings with nearby research vessels. SOFS flux data is found to be of high quality with typically minimal sensor drift at the end of its mission. Statistics indicate that over the study period, the average net heat flux at the SOFS location is -9.4 Wm-2, a small net ocean heat gain. The interannual, seasonal, and diurnal variabilities of air-sea heat flux components have been investigated in depth. Extreme heat flux events with their associated environmental conditions have also been studied. At the end, a case study is presented which shows a strong horizontal sea surface temperature gradient (3.4°C) over a short distance (35.5 km), hence the large heat flux difference (up to 242.5 Wm-2).
