Tropical Pacific climate change: Bridging theory, models, observations, and paleoclimate constraints

The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) illustrates the ability of the Earth's climate system to undergo dramatic and rapid reorganization and drives interannual climate variability on a global scale. ENSO extremes have severe and far-reaching impacts, affecting the natural environment and the lives of billions of people around the globe. However, despite extensive research efforts, limited progress has been made regarding how ENSO will change under increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. The short instrumental record limits robust observational constraints, while persistent mean state biases in state-of-the-art coupled climate models prohibit realistic future predictions. However, valuable insight can be gained by extending the instrumental record with paleoclimate observations. In particular, mechanisms of low-frequency ENSO variability can be evaluated by combining modern climate theory with numerical models and constraints developed from the paleoclimate record. In this talk, I illustrate how this approach provides new constraints on the relationship between ENSO and the background state of the tropical Pacific and discuss implications for future tropical Pacific climate change.
