Love, Sex, Writing: Erotic Letters from the Walls of Pompeii
The citizens of the city of Pompeii, a Roman town buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE, have often been seen by scholars as erotically obsessed. Representations, both visual and verbal, of love and sex are found everywhere in the city, from the dining rooms of wealthy mansions to the humble walls of bakeries. In this talk, Dr. Milnor will focus on one potent symbol of erotic communication, the love letter, and examine the ways in which it appears in Pompeian art and writing. She will argue that by looking at the erotic epistle we can better understand what love and its representation meant to ancient Pompeians.
