Dear NAGPS Members

It's official! The school year has started, at least for some of us. I know today, I have the first day of classes. I'm in the same breath anxious, excited, prepared, annoyed, and sleepy. But the time has come for me, and us, to start the next part of the new chapter of our academic calendar.

As a collective, we should also consider the issues that face us. Summer brings with it changes. We can recall that Mizzou had to face the challenge of health insurance for graduate students<http://www.stltoday.com/business/local/university-of-missouri-ends-funding-for-graduate-student-health-insurance/article_a58ab3d6-890c-58e8-9da3-87a5a90ef757.html>. And while Mizzou is just one of many institutions grappling with this particular issue, collectively, we must be abreast of the policy changes at all levels that can immediately affect our lives.

Some of you may be new to the position of graduate student leadership, but your predecessors have provided you with a great resource through NAGPS<http://nagps.org/>. While I know that many of these pending events are early in our tenure of 2015/2016, these are important for us to collectively take action on the issues that face us.

On September 24th - 29th, 2015 Graduate students will gather in Washington, DC for the Fall Legislative Actions Days and Advocacy Summit<http://nagps.org/events/fall-2015-advocacy-summit-legislative-action-days/>. We urge you to make the preparations necessary to get involved and be at this event. The more voices we have, the more likely our voices will be heard. See below for more information.

Additionally, the 29th National NAGPS Conference<http://nagps.org/events/29th-annual-national-conference/> will be at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. More information concerning what you need to know will be forthcoming in the next message sent out. However, if you have any questions or need more information now, please contact Zachary Brooks, our Vice President at vice-president at nagps.org<mailto:vice-president at nagps.org>.

NAGPS Legislative Action Days

Making Graduate Student Voices
Heard on the Hill

September, 24-29th:

Washington D.C.

What are Legislative Action Days?

Every year, NAGPS hosts two Legislative Action Days (LAD) to bring graduate and professional students to Washington D.C. to meet with Members of Congress and their staffers. These meetings are an excellent opportunity to meet with your region's Representatives and Senators. You and your fellow graduate students have the opportunity to demonstrate the value of graduate education directly to policymakers!

The cost to attend LAD is $25 for NAGPS members, and the non-member registration<http://nagps.org/events/fall-2015-advocacy-summit-legislative-action-days/> fee is only $50.00. Costs associated with attendance will primarily come from accommodations, food, and transport. Our hotel is conveniently located close to Capitol Hill and a metro station to minimize costs to attendees.
