#FSUglobal: President Thrasher, FSU community celebrate International Education Month

...Cihan Can, an international student from Turkey, is pursuing his Ph.D. in math education and will graduate from FSU this December after having spent the last several years here.

“I chose FSU because the professors from our department were really welcoming, and the community I found here has helped me succeed,” Can said. “In my career, I would like to focus on multiculturalism in math education because it’s really important to be aware of the cultural identities of students in your classroom, even with a topic like mathematics that is supposed to be universal and devoid of cultural influence.”

States are testing unproven ways to eliminate remedial ed — on their students

...“It is still a good idea to give students the placement test,” said Christine Mokher, a Florida State University associate professor of education and a co-author of the study. “Advisers talked about how they had a really hard time knowing how to advise students on which course to take. Major: Foreign and Second Language Education (PhD)

Before I came to FSU, I was convinced that the stimulating academic environment and the harmonious atmosphere among the faculties at the College of Education would greatly facilitate my progress of becoming a sophisticated researcher in the field of Foreign and Second Language Education. I feel that the College of Education at FSU has a lot to offer me, and it turned out my decision to come here was not wrong at all. I have benefited a great deal from the experience of studying at the College of Education, and the instruction and guidance the professors here have presented have really refreshed my understanding toward language education. The two years of learning as a graduate student at College of Education has helped me develop several valuable competences, such as critical thinking ability, mature savvy and the spirit of dedication. Importantly, I also have mastered a variety of research methods that I genuinely considered valuable for a lifetime as a researcher. Also, it makes me more eager to help and inspire the next generation who wants to make a difference and to be committed to the work in the field of language education.
