[https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/1c1c2749-4dd2-427a-a9d8-865fb96f1903.gif?rdr=true] Colleagues, Please join me in congratulating Dr. Annie Wofford and her co-PIs Dr. Lara Perez-Felkner and Dr. Bret Staudt Willet on receiving a Sloan Foundation Grant. Dr. Wofford and her team were recently notified that they were successful in securing a Sloan Foundation grant for a project titled ?Aligning Graduate Education and Workforce Opportunities: A Robust, Equity-Focused Landscape Scan of Computing Terminology.? Aligning Graduate Education and Workforce Opportunities will investigate the (mis)alignment of computing-related terminology used to describe master?s and doctoral training at Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) and that which is employed in computing-related job advertisements. With the goal of examining terminology as a potential barrier to racial equity in the computing and technological workforce, this mixed methods project will offer a robust, equity-focused landscape scan that establishes a typology of computing-related terminology. Again, please join me in congratulating Drs. Wofford, Perez-Felkner, and Willet! If you are interested in receiving assistance as you go about seeking funding to support your research, please contact me or Katherine Yaun, the Senior Editor in the COE Office of Research. My staff and I will be glad to help you find grant opportunities that fit your research interests, and we will work closely with you to help you prepare and submit a strong grant proposal. I hope that you will contact us. All the best, Joshua I. Newman, Ph.D. Professor & Associate Dean for Research College of Education Florida State University ? We educate and motivate students, but we can also advocate. Lawmakers and elected officials are not experts on every issue before them, even if they have backgrounds in education. They rely on outside information to help inform decision making. If we are not advocating on behalf of our students, teachers, and profession, someone else is ? and they may tell a different story. If we are not at the table, we are on the menu. Speakers in this session will share practical ways for education faculty to successfully engage in advocacy at local, state, and federal levels.
