Help us recruit, train, and retain the next generation of education professionals in Florida through your gift to the ElevatED Challenge!

From November 22nd to November 30th (Giving Tuesday), Florida’s Colleges of Education have committed to working together to show support for education careers through a first-of-its-kind education challenge.

All but one of the State University System colleges have agreed to support ElevatED this year (I bet you can guess who hasn’t), and eight will participate in the ElevatED Challenge this month.

Donor participation challenges are about the total number of participants, not necessarily the dollar goals we hope to reach, so gifts of as little as $5 are welcome and will count toward our overall participation goal. You can track the combined progress of every school and make your donation at elevatedchallenge.com<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0014gRQh0vx1BuMWYg4jqrLULSvNvUnxB-0T9aaYwhZu-opIP9WVwbrJhfy-LI2BgMNlMMbZFunYGVo9eTD5e44sZxNZI9rJoyHtX1pgnMAkkRDSqceVKeHs9_CxF9NVW4Ig8Bh0HbZVKrkpXYnGnYRRlshZ2W7QXx-&c=IxC74oHkds3ftQgH0FSezTQpgI3V6nrzlmIBcKS4uTF5qmkl6cnSUw==&ch=gSjlnxYYkHwT5q8oYOsJXdD_HNGD0UiAs7Yg9PAS69zRBW8FFYfUHw==__;!!PhOWcWs!kwi-SKvFVsj6-ePATLg4myS6kAxMMsRW194LRp5qt9O2hgYBmdtXAQOGZZ3scAzH$> starting on November 22.

Thank you for your support in elevating education!

During this course, you will be introduced to the basics of one of the most fundamental aspects of higher education: institutional research.

You will learn the practical and theoretical application of institutional research, and you will learn how it is applied throughout universities.

P.S.: This course is online, and all of the readings are online and free.

Two excellent higher education courses are being offered for this upcoming Spring semester.

EDH 5639: Management in Higher Education - Leadership and management are core, fundamental skills for professionals in higher education.

Throughout Management in Higher Education, you will master management tools, group coordination, and decision-making techniques. You'll also learn skills that help you to implement positive change in higher-education organizations.

P.S.: This course is online and asynchronous.

EDH 6040: Research on College Students - Researching college students is a win-win for everyone involved. They get extra credit, and researchers get access to a massive pool of participants to work with. That said, it doesn't come without its challenges.

In Research on College Students, not only will you learn to understand the best practices for performing research on college students, but you'll learn how to handle the most common issues that you may see when performing research on college students.

There are theoretical, practical, and (most critically) methodological challenges that come with researching college students. You'll look at how these challenges have influenced past studies (for better and for worse), and you'll learn how to anticipate them and handle them successfully.

Most importantly, you'll learn how to apply this knowledge to your own research projects. This is a great course to look at if you expect to be doing research on college students in the future.

Intimidated by writing for publication? Just feel the need to improve? Whether you are just shaking off the rust or just want to workshop your skills, this course will increase your ability to write for publication in scholarly journals.

The major course assignment for this course will be to either

  1. Write an introduction to a research manuscript, OR
  2. Write an article for a practitioner audience

You will learn to create an excellent piece, workshop it, pitch it, and submit it for publication. Learn writing strategies, editing tactics, and productive writing habits.

Teachers are constantly challenged to find new and innovative ways to teach. In this course, you will develop a broader understanding of how students learn, how to help them learn, how teachers learn, and how to identify and tackle the problems around professional learning for ambitious teaching in STEM.

Learn how to promote teacher learning around ambitious instructional practices and keep up with some of the latest research on professional learning.

Two graduate-level statistics courses are going to be available over the next academic year. These courses aren't always available, so be sure to register fast if they sound interesting!

In Spring: EDF 6937-002: Machine Learning Models in Education - This is a survey course that will assess some of the most common machine learning models: clustering, support vector machines, neural nets...the works.
You'll also learn how to evaluate the quality of machine learning forecasts. This course will be taught in the programming language R, but if you know a different programming language, such as Python, you are more than welcome to use it for the course.

In Fall: EDF 5485: Missing Data Analysis - In this course, you will learn how to handle problems with missing data through the use of single and multiple imputation methods. You will also learn about Bayesian statistics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.

If you have any questions (such as, "what on Earth is a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method?"), feel free to reach out to Dr. Russell Almond at ralmond at fsu.edu.

PS: Both courses require a background in statistics equivalent to having taken a regression course (EDF 5401: Generalized Linear Models or something equivalent).
