FSU launches Big Bets initiative to tackle big questions

Florida State University has launched a new initiative designed to amplify centers and institutes that are doing high-profile, public-impact research and connect them with donors interested in pursuing big questions.

“Big Bets requires faculty to look several years, perhaps even a decade, into the future and articulate the major impacts their research can achieve with the infusion of a multimillion-dollar world-changing gift,” Fulkerson said. “We recognize the delta that exists between our excellent research centers and the resources needed to make a colossal impact. This initiative is an attempt to bridge that gap and connect our centers to big thinkers with big ideas about changing the world.”

Fulkerson chose three centers to work with for the initial pilot phase of the initiative – the Florida Center for Reading Research, the Institute for Justice Research and Development and the Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Response Center.

FSU researchers receive $1.5M federal grant to enhance diversity in higher education

Florida State University researchers, in partnership with Florida A&M University, have received a $1.5 million grant to enhance diversity in the field of education research.

The five-year grant from the Institute of Education Sciences — the independent, nonpartisan statistics, research and evaluation arm of the U.S. Department of Education — will support the continuation of the Partners United for Research Pathways Oriented to Social Justice in Education (PURPOSE) training program. Launched in 2017, the program trains diverse cohorts of students in research with a focus on social justice in education.

FSU researchers receive NSF grant to study teaching practices in virtual reality

Florida State University researchers have received a nearly $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to investigate teaching practices for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) using mixed reality simulations and virtual students.

Fengfeng Ke, professor of instructional systems and learning technologies in FSU’s College of Education is principal investigator for the project. Ke said the funds will go toward solving challenges in the training of STEM teachers.

Popular ‘Wonders’ Curriculum Shows Gaps in Alignment to Reading Research

...The review also looked at how well the curriculum built student knowledge about social studies and science topics through literacy lessons. It does partially, said Sonia Cabell, an assistant professor of reading education at Florida State University, who reviewed knowledge building for the SAP report. Social studies and science content is covered every week, but the curriculum itself is not organized around these topics, nor designed to systematically build students’ knowledge—rather, the curriculum is organized around themes.

New report by FSU Center for Postsecondary Success highlights progress of Florida’s developmental education reform

A new report by Florida State University’s Center for Postsecondary Success (CPS) highlights the evolution in the implementation of the Florida developmental education reform.

Stipulated by Senate Bill 1720, Florida’s developmental education reform was implemented in the fall of 2014 and required institutions in the Florida College System (FCS) to redesign the delivery of their developmental education courses. It also required FCS institutions to help newly enrolled students decide whether or not to opt into developmental education courses through enhanced advising practices.

FSU’S Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching to partner with American Volleyball Coaches Association

Florida State University’s Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching, known as FSU COACH, has formed a new partnership with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). As part of the partnership, FSU COACH will be the official coach education provider for the AVCA.

Florida State University is one of the nation's top institutions of higher learning. Within the College of Education, its online degree program in Educational Leadership/Administration has an outstanding reputation of preparing its graduates for successful passage of the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE) and careers as school leaders.

In my first year of the program, I have already established professional relationships with my fellow cohorts and professors that will prove invaluable as I continue my journey in school administration. These individuals genuinely care about my success and immediately lend a hand in times of need.

Upon successful completion of the program, I hope to be accepted into the Miami-Dade County Public Schools BENCH program, which will prepare me for the role of assistant principal. One day, I would like to make a greater impact as a school principal continuing to make a difference in the lives of young people as I strive to do each day.
