FSU College of Education faculty member to retire after 46-year tenure

Robert A. Reiser, associate dean for research and Robert M. Morgan Professor of Instructional Systems, will retire at the end of the year after 46 years of service to Florida State University.

Reiser began at Florida State in 1976 as a research associate in the Learning Systems Institute and an assistant professor in the College of Education.

Vision problems in the United States continue to rise, with a projected doubling of visual conditions in this country from nearly 8 million affected individuals to greater than 16 million individuals by 2050. Without implementing strategies to ameliorate their quality of life through access to rehabilitation and medical intervention, individuals, their families, their communities, and all of society will be impacted negatively.

I chose FSU because of the alignment between my research interests and the research conducted by my now-advisor, Dr. Motoko Akiba. I felt as though I would be able to work closely with her and build a positive mentor-mentee relationship that I didn’t feel with many faculty-members at other schools.

My favorite part about the Education Policy and Evaluation program so far has been the faculty. Every faculty member has been so supportive and kind in their interactions with students and they seem like they really want the students to succeed beyond just passing a class.

I am interested in how school districts provide support for teacher professional learning. Specifically, I am looking at the different conditions across Florida school districts that either support or hinder the role of the literacy coach. I am also interested in higher education and labor market returns to underrepresented students in response to the Next Generation Science Standards.

After I graduate, I would like to stay in research. I am really enjoying the process of doing research and interacting with the “puzzles” that it gives to me. I think I am leaning towards an academic pathway, but non-academic routes, such as think-tanks or research institutes, interest me, as well. At the end of the day, I will go down whichever pathway hires me!
