Speech recognition in education: The powers and perils

As education researchers focused on children’s language and reading, concepts like “equity” and “disparity” are not new to us. In fact, we obsess about them.

We analyze data to understand and monitor. We design interventions to change them. We labor (sometimes painfully) to better explain the forces that contribute to inequity in schools so that educators, parents, and policymakers can use it to improve outcomes for all students.

USAID Collaboration with Nigeria’s Bayero University in Kano Strengthens Early Grade Reading in Nigeria

Over the past three years, a unique collaboration between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Nigeria’s Bayero University in Kano (BUK), and Florida State University (FSU) in the United States has helped Africa’s most populous country strengthen its ability to teach early grade reading, the foundation of lifelong learning.

The Instructional Systems & Learning Technologies (ISLT) program is the top program in its field in the nation. In addition to the world-renowned reputation of this program, the faculty, staff and students at the COE and at Florida State University were some of the reasons why I chose to come to the U.S. and start my studies here.

I have always been fascinated by using technology in education. My research interests are at the interaction of learning sciences and learning analytics with a focus on using digital games to assess and improve students’ knowledge, skills, and other attributes. For the past five years, I have been involved in several research projects in Dr. Valerie Shute’s lab, where we designed and developed a stealth assessment of physics understanding in a digital game we created called Physics Playground<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001iIIoPlpa-8M5mdG9Fvsolh8opO5TcMJwyo2jPOtKPpEtxvSXDczgecndjgefL2WYZQ-aW90gzVzhGV2Vgd2x0En_jctmbJHWDLsIant-Ep5uHMi5AE8AfpIBMjWstXIgippeZEKWMZ51XVJmz5ZqVrL8Y6R8tIV0&c=twlSFp_urtg2i1-TyeQoRlZHMFPuGB2U_qwRYlzg16GeS_SVUzOB0g==&ch=BU62eRqrk617fUPxhnJmPfDuNy9WGqvN5tUAJmBZ2t2vFX8_K21pyA==__;!!PhOWcWs!kW-C8UpkGS1cQ82CwmA5kesU-LGFXGfh68ubB9o54IswX3XOuLaLRJJ2Mc5xCZv6sVSncHXn$>. Stealth assessment is an assessment technique that uses a technology-rich, immersive environment (e.g., digital games) and assesses students’ proficiency level at any given time using log data. The same technique can be used to assess other skills, such as creativity, persistence, and problem-solving (otherwise known as 21st-century skills).

After graduation this fall, I will continue working with Dr. Shute as her postdoc for about one year. I want to work in academia as a university professor and continue conducting research in the field of learning sciences and educational technology. As an active learning scientist, I hope to address important problems and help advance the field and help people learn better, making them more capable of solving the problems they face in life.

After being here for six years, the quality of education in this program, college, and university exceeded my expectations. I can say this program, especially my advisor, Dr. Shute, changed me in many good ways. My decision to come to FSU will stay as one of my best life decisions I ever made.
