In fact, we obsess about them. We analyze data to understand and monitor. We design interventions to change them. We labor (sometimes painfully) to better explain the forces that contribute to inequity in schools so that educators, parents, and policymakers can use it to improve outcomes for all students. In addition to the world-renowned reputation of this program, the faculty, staff and students at the COE and at Florida State University were some of the reasons why I chose to come to the U.S. and start my studies here. I have always been fascinated by using technology in education. My research interests are at the interaction of learning sciences and learning analytics with a focus on using digital games to assess and improve students? knowledge, skills, and other attributes. For the past five years, I have been involved in several research projects in Dr. Valerie Shute?s lab, where we designed and developed a stealth assessment of physics understanding in a digital game we created called Physics Playground. Stealth assessment is an assessment technique that uses a technology-rich, immersive environment (e.g., digital games) and assesses students? proficiency level at any given time using log data. The same technique can be used to assess other skills, such as creativity, persistence, and problem-solving (otherwise known as 21st-century skills). After graduation this fall, I will continue working with Dr. Shute as her postdoc for about one year. I want to work in academia as a university professor and continue conducting research in the field of learning sciences and educational technology. As an active learning scientist, I hope to address important problems and help advance the field and help people learn better, making them more capable of solving the problems they face in life. After being here for six years, the quality of education in this program, college, and university exceeded my expectations. I can say this program, especially my advisor, Dr. Shute, changed me in many good ways. My decision to come to FSU will stay as one of my best life decisions I ever made. Ahmad was recently featured in an episode of Silver Lining for Learning where he discussed stealth assessment and the project he started in Iran to help teachers during the pandemic. URL: From coe-grad at lists.fsu.edu Tue Sep 15 17:03:12 2020 From: coe-grad at lists.fsu.edu (FSU College of Education) Date: Tue, 15 Sep 2020 21:03:12 +0000 Subject: [Coe-grad] Electronic Form Submission Processes - Important Guidance for Students Message-ID: Good Afternoon, COE Graduate Students. At this time, many of the faculty and staff in the College of Education and other offices across campus are working remotely. Although the staff in Office of Academic Services and Intern Support (OASIS) are not physically in our campus offices, we continue to support College of Education students in the steps and milestones required to achieve degree completion. As most of you already know, the steps to degree completion are paved with many student forms. To help students, faculty, and staff navigate the electronic form submission process, OASIS has updated our ?forms? website to provide the workflow for obtaining signatures and the submission of forms commonly used in our College. Authenticated electronic signatures are required on forms. Authenticated electronic signatures are obtained by using Adobe Sign or DocuSign. The PDF-specific forms listed on the OASIS websites are formatted for PDF-fill in and electronic signatures. Most University-level forms are also formatted for PDF fill-in and signature. Please see below for more information on electronic signatures and form submissions. Student Forms College of Education OASIS Student Forms Under each form listed on the OASIS ?For Graduate Students? webpage (link below), you will find the order in which applicable signatures are to be collected, as well as and the form submission workflow, for that form. If you need assistance with completing a form, please contact your department staff. A list of academic department contacts are provided in this email. For Graduate Students: https://education.fsu.edu/student-resources/student-academic-services-oasis/for-graduate-students Please bookmark these site for future use. For forms not available on public websites, such as grade change forms and late drop/add forms, contact the appropriate academic department staff person for assistance. (See the ?College of Education Department Contacts? section of this document.) IMPORTANT: Each form must be submitted in a separate PDF file or DocuSign submission. Do not combine individual student forms into one file. Registrar?s Office Student Forms Many student forms are found on the Registrar?s Office website: https://registrar.fsu.edu/forms/. Please be advised that some forms on this website are not yet available as PDF-fill in. For your convenience, OASIS has converted many of these forms to PDF fill-in and placed them on our graduate student website (noted above). The Graduate School Forms Graduate School forms and applications for students, staff and faculty are found at https://gradschool.fsu.edu/forms. Electronic Form Submissions via DocuSign and Adobe Authenticated Digital Signatures (Adobe Sign) DocuSign DocuSign is a cloud-based electronic signature service that allows users to easily send, sign and store documents in a secure, online location. With DocuSign, the entire document approval process can be managed electronically. To use DocuSign to obtain signatures on the College of Education forms listed on this page, follow the login instructions below. 1. Go to docusign.fsu.edu. 2. Sign in with your FSUID and password. 3. Click ?New? next to the ?Sign or Get Signatures? option. 4. To obtain signatures on a document, choose ?Send an Envelope? and upload the applicable form. 5. Add all required signers (and FSU email) on the applicable fields. FSU DocuSign Support website: https://its.fsu.edu/service-catalog/communication-collaboration/electronic-signatures * How do I get support at FSU for DocuSign? https://faq.its.fsu.edu/communications/electronic-signatures-docusign/how-do-i-get-support-docusign * How do I share my envelope with other users in DocuSign? https://faq.its.fsu.edu/communications/electronic-signatures-docusign/how-do-i-share-my-envelope-other-users-docusign Visit the DocuSign website to browse ?how to? articles or register for a free "DocuSign Signing and Sending" training session: https://support.docusign.com/. Adobe Authenticated Digital Signatures via Adobe Sign FSU students can create a free Adobe Sign account with a valid FSU email address. Free accounts are primarily for signers of documents. Adobe Sign supports digital signatures by simply placing the Digital Signature field on a form (either via Text Tags, drag and drop in the Adobe Sign Authoring environment, or authoring in Adobe Acrobat with Acroforms). For more information on how to use digital signatures in Adobe Sign, visit https://helpx.adobe.com/sign/using/digital-signatures.html. To create a free Adobe Sign account with your FSU student email account, visit https://helpx.adobe.com/sign/using/create-adobe-sign-free-account.html. Students are required to use their official FSU student email account for Adobe Sign digital signatures. FSU employees can also use Adobe Creative Cloud at home. Please use your Adobe Enterprise ID to sign into Adobe.com to download and install the software. Your Adobe Enterprise ID will be created using your FSUID in the format fsuid at fsu.edu. For assistance with Adobe or any other software, please contact the COE Office of Information and Instructional Technologies (OIIT) directly: https://education.fsu.edu/about/faculty-staff-resources/oiit. Florida Educational Research Association (FERA) Virtual Forum: Educational Research in Urgent Times This year's virtual forum will only feature virtual paper sessions for graduate students to share/discuss their research ideas. The purpose of the FERA graduate paper session is to support innovations and creative research ideas in the field of education. Papers that speak to the conference theme are encouraged, but not required - we encourage all types of paper submissions on issues relevant to the education and educational research community. This is an opportunity for graduate students to share research in an interactive way and expand their academic, social, and professional networks. As such, graduate student presenters can expect to receive feedback from professionals and other graduate students in a deliberately friendly and supportive atmosphere. Please consider submitting a proposal to present at the FERA Virtual Forum Graduate Student Paper Session. For consistency across proposals, graduate students are requested to follow the guidelines provided below: * Write no more than 500 words excluding tables and references in Microsoft-Word format. * Address the following seven elements: 1) title of the paper, 2) objectives or purposes, 3) theoretical framework or perspective(s), 4) methods, techniques, or modes of inquiry, 5) data sources, evidence, objects, or materials, 6) results and/or substantiated conclusions or warrants for arguments/point of view, and 7) significance of the study. * All written work should be typed in 12 pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced. * Do not identify author's name or institutional affiliation in the proposal. * Include your name and institutional affiliation in the email body (not within the proposal document). * Email the proposal to the following email address: student.proposal at gmail.com The deadline for submission of the 2020 FERA graduate paper session is 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2020. The evaluation of proposal submissions will be based on the seven elements mentioned above, and quality of writing. The applicants will be notified about the decisions via email on Friday, October 30, 2020. Please keep in mind that you are required to be a FERA member to participate in the Virtual Forum. For graduate students, FERA membership is $15. The registration fee is not required this year. Also, please note that all presentation sessions will be recorded and made available to attendees after the Virtual Forum. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact huan2015 at ufl.edu or huibinzhang at ufl.edu. One of the best ways to become better at proposal writing is to have your work critiqued by a professional copy editor. However this can be expensive, especially for research and creative proposals. This workshop will follow Mike Mitchell from FSU's Office of Research Development as he copy edits the proposals of two current doctoral students LIVE during the workshop and discusses the reasoning behind each edit, providing examples to improve your own proposals, without the need to hire an editor. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/63a17f60-7662-4b27-8ece-42ca773aca30.jpg] Cybersecurity Awareness Month All month long! While making change, she has also developed structures that will ensure the success and sustainability of her change initiatives, even if/when she is no longer involved."
