Rob's jealousy for Bob's popularity reached an all time high at last semester's Happy Trees: Painting Party at Strozier. Seeing all of the students relaxed and painting along to his cousin's pleasant videos outraged him! He hoped in hiding all the trees Bob would be unable to host another painting party... But it's not too late! Bob has sent out his faithful fans (that's you!) to hunt for happy trees and bring back the joy of painting. If you find a happy tree around the libraries or campus, bring it to either event to enter for the chance to win a fun prize! One winner will be selected after the events and contacted via email to pick up their prize. Can't find a tree? That's fine too! You can still attend the event and paint along with Bob Ross and friends to de-stress during midterms! Supplies and snacks provided just bring your imagination and positive vibes. For questions about the happy trees or painting event, reach out to lib-engagement at fsu.edu. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/409e650a-d801-431a-ad12-9f487d54ae45.jpg] Dissertation Boot Camp Friday, March 6 12:00 - 5:00 PM Strozier Library, Bradley Reading Room A free one-day event for dissertation writers and other doctoral students to learn about helpful tools, tips and campus resources for writing a dissertation and managing a dissertation research project effectively. Research in a Minute: Dr. Marty Swanbrow Becker Associate Professor, Counseling Psychology and School Psychology [Dr. Martin Swanbrow Becker Research in a Minute | FSU College of Education] COE Student Spotlight: Emma Leone [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/8798737f-609d-4f89-b784-278d0f051a0e.jpg] Hometown: Elmwood, Nebraska Major: Sport Psychology (MS) I chose to begin my graduate studies with FSU?s Sport Psychology program for a multitude of reasons, one of which includes the duality of the program. I believe research and applied work to be extremely complementary, and the ability to concurrently develop both skillsets was appealing. During my graduate studies, I wanted to obtain a rich and comprehensive understanding of the athlete experience and develop my competencies as a scientist-practitioner. Between the course offerings, applied work with structured supervision, and ample research opportunities with faculty of diverse backgrounds and interests, this program offered everything I needed to achieve that goal. My current research interests are broadly concerned with student-athlete mental health and well-being. My thesis project aims to explore various mechanisms by which dispositional gratitude may influence sport well-being and resilience in collegiate student-athletes. I am also interested in exploring the use of various mental skills training techniques during the injury recovery and return-to-sport process in addition to psychophysiological indicators of readiness to return to sport. Following graduation, I will be transitioning into our Sport Psychology doctoral program and studying under Dr. Graig Chow. As a doctoral student, I plan to continue my development as a research-practitioner and prepare for a future career in academia. Have news to share? We'd love to hear from you! I am also an adjunct instructor at Tallahassee Community College. I chose to pursue the ISLT program initially because I was trying to close some training design and development gaps in my career. I worked in a technical procedure writing and training development unit for several years and we were not doing a good job with how we designed training and performance support documents. I felt like we had gaps, but no one knew how to close them, so I decided along with a handful of my friends (who were also my co-workers) to enroll in the ISLT program to close those gaps. My time at FSU has been amazing. I am learning and applying everything from this program in both my roles as an adjunct instructor and in state government where I work full-time. About the Program: Students who graduate from FSU's Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies (ISLT) program gain the skills needed for in-demand instructional design careers. Instructional designers work in both public and private sectors and create training, instruction and organizational systems. As the #1-ranked program in the country, our instructional design program produces highly sought-after professionals. Some of the biggest names in instructional design taught at Florida State, and our program continues the legacy of luminaries such as Robert Gagn?, Leslie Briggs, Marcy Driscoll and Robert Reiser. Moreover, students are encouraged to leave campus for spring break and the two weeks immediately after that. Since the 2020 Marvalene Hughes Research in Education Conference was scheduled to take place during this period (it had been scheduled for April 3), the conference has been canceled. Plans for the 2021 Hughes Conference are yet to be determined. Hughes Conference travel funds are still available to faculty and students who have already traveled to the regional/national conference they had specified in their Hughes conference proposal. If the regional or national conference you had planned to attend has been canceled or has not yet occurred, please cancel your trip immediately. If you incur some penalties for doing so, funds may be available to cover those expenses. Please contact the travel representative in your department about this matter. FSU SHIFTS FROM IN-PERSON CLASSES TO REMOTE CLASSES MARCH 23 FOR TWO WEEKS. UNIVERSITY REMAINS OPEN FOR BUSINESS. IN-PERSON CLASSES RESUME APRIL 6. Florida State University has proactively monitored and responded to daily developments as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread in Florida and across the United States. Administrators campus-wide have met every day for several weeks to assess and carry out protocols and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), Florida Department of Health, and other medical authorities. Our highest priority remains the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff. Therefore, we will shift to online instruction for all courses on March 23 for a period of at least two weeks. FSU has a robust emergency plan in place and is fully prepared to provide instruction online or by other methods. We are taking this action proactively to protect not only our campus community but the larger community as well. Important Dates: March 14 at Noon ? Residence halls will close to visitors and for those residents who depart for spring break. Residents who stay may remain in the halls. March 23 ? April 5 ? Classes will be held via remote instruction. April 4 at Noon ? Residence halls are anticipated to reopen to visitors and those residents who traveled for spring break. April 6 ? Face-to-face classes are anticipated to resume. Campus Operations: Beginning at the end of the academic day on Friday, March 20, and through at least April 4, Florida State University will move from face-to-face instruction to online instruction and other alternative methods. * During the two-week period of online instruction following spring break, the university will remain generally open for normal business operations. * Students are encouraged to leave campus for spring break and the two-week period after. * Students who leave campus should take with them any devices, textbooks and other materials they will need to continue their coursework remotely. * They should take any personal effects, valuables or other items they might need for an extended period of time away from campus. * Students who choose to remain in our residence halls on campus during spring break and during the period of online instruction will not be allowed to travel away from Tallahassee and come back to their residence hall. * Campus services will remain open and operational with limited or reduced services for students during the two-week online instruction period, such as dining, library services and counseling services. * Official guidelines around special events will be forthcoming. * The university will continue to implement CDC-recommended social distancing on campus. * Units that have invited an external speaker or external groups to campus between March 30 and April 6 should postpone, cancel or virtually conduct those events. The university will provide guidance on athletic events and competitions based on coordination with the Atlantic Coast Conference and the NCAA. * Despite changes to the delivery of academic content and our residential status, Florida State University remains open and fully operational. * University Administrators and Emergency Management officials will continue to take measures to protect the health and safety of our community. * Faculty and Staff will play an important role in helping transition coursework to online content and continuing the operations of the institution. As such, faculty and staff who are well are expected to report to work as normal in their regularly assigned work locations. * We have asked all employees who have duties that can be performed elsewhere to begin preparing for remote work. Those preparations should continue; however, we do not anticipate any immediate change to schedules and work locations at this time. * OPS employees should continue to work as long as there is meaningful work available. Absent the availability of work, OPS employees may extend their work hours after April 6 to mitigate any hours missed during this period. * During the next few weeks, the Office of Human Resources, in consultation with University Administration and Emergency Management, will continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and communicate any future adjustments impacting the workplace. Guidance for faculty and staff regarding working from home and other policies will be provided soon. Florida State will continue to closely monitor and evaluate information and guidance provided by state and federal agencies. As you know, this is a rapidly changing, dynamic situation, and we appreciate your patience as we continue to make decisions that keep our university community safe. Please check back on our website fsu.edu/coronavirus by April 5 to get the latest information in case our plan changes due to new developments or recommendations from the CDC, WHO, and the Florida Department of Health. Above all, practice good handwashing hygiene and other healthy habits, not only for your own safety, but the health and safety of others. ? As we would do at the conference, we would like to announce the winners of the Robert M. Gagn? Research Award. Robert Mills Gagn? earned his Ph.D. from Brown University in 1940. In 1969, following an already distinguished career working with U.S. Air Force research laboratories, acting as director of research for the American Institutes of Research, and serving as a distinguished professor at the University of California at Berkeley, Gagn? was recruited to FSU. He is the only faculty member in the College of Education to have served as president of the American Educational Research Association. He is only the second COE faculty member to have been named a Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor, the highest honor that the faculty can bestow on a colleague. His scholarly contributions elevated the reputation of his program, Instructional Systems, as well as the college and university. Gagn? retired in 1985 but continued working and writing for almost 10 more years. This award honors his research legacy and the spirit of mentoring with which he worked with students and faculty colleagues. Congratulations to this year's winners: Sonia Cabell Assistant Professor, School of Teacher Education "Impact of the Core Knowledge Language Arts' Read-Aloud Program on Kindergarteners' Vocabulary, Listening Comprehension, and General Knowledge" This paper reports on two randomized controlled trials examining the effects of the Core Knowledge Language Arts: Knowledge Strand (CKLA) literacy curriculum on kindergarteners' vocabulary, listening comprehension, and content knowledge. The CKLA read-aloud program is widely used in the United States. It is one of the few widely used English Language Arts (ELA) curricula that feature systematic knowledge building in science and social studies topics. CKLA is a unique approach because it follows a planned sequence of specific topics and views children's comprehension skills (e.g., forming predictions, answering inferential questions) as resulting from the knowledge and vocabulary they acquire from hearing texts read aloud. The view has a grounding in cognitive science, positing that children who have a wider breadth of knowledge and vocabulary have an advantage as they have wider and stronger semantic networks of information to draw upon when comprehending a text (Willingham, 2006). In this work, we examine the curriculum's impact on children's oral language and knowledge after one semester of the program in kindergarten classrooms. This work is important because our nation is facing a reading crisis, as two-thirds of all 4th graders cannot comprehend texts with proficiency (National Assessment of Education Progress, 2019). It is therefore critical to evaluate widely-used, content-rich ELA programs to test their impact on children's vocabulary and listening comprehension ability. Sebnem Atabas Graduate Student, School of Teacher Education "A Tale of Two Sets of Norms: Comparing Opportunities for Student Agency in Mathematics Lessons with and without Interactive Simulations" In recent years, many authors have argued that the nature of mathematics in schools should be regarded as a dynamic and exploratory process (Boaler & Greeno, 2000; Langer-Osuna, 2017), rather than as a static and structured system of learning facts and using procedures. Recent research suggests that empowering students to engage in mathematics as a dynamic and exploratory process demands a different view of classroom discourse and interactions among students and the teacher (Langer-Osuna, 2017). Teachers are expected to "draw information out of students" (Boaler, 2003, p. 4) rather than transferring the information to students. Aligned with this expectation, teachers are expected to share their authority with students, encourage them to take responsibility in deciding the appropriateness of their answers, and support the use of mathematical tools in justifying or refuting mathematical claims. Thus, students are positioned to act with some responsibility in making decisions about the reasonableness or validity of answers to mathematical problems, rather than relying on the teacher's authority. As we consider the differing expectations from students and the teacher in mathematics classrooms, transforming the already established norms and expectations in these classrooms may be a driving force for change in classrooms. In addition to social norms as general classroom obligations, Cobb and Yackel (1996) proposed sociomathematical norms which are comprised of obligations that are specifically related to mathematics - what students are mathematically accountable for doing and what counts as being mathematically competent in classrooms. Previous analyses of contrasting norms have documented classrooms in which the meaning of knowing and doing mathematics significantly differed-for example, to investigate student identities established in different mathematics classrooms (Cobb et al., 2009). In addition to studies comparing norms in different classrooms representing reform-oriented versus traditional ones (Cobb et al, 2009), other studies have taken place in the context of an intensive collaboration with a classroom teacher (McClain & Cobb, 2001) or teaching experiment (Yackel et al., 2000) leading to change over time in the norms in those classrooms. Some other studies investigated the role of technology (e.g., multi-representational software) in affording the emergence of different kinds of sociomathematical norms as a result of interactions between students and the tool (Hershkowitz & Tabach, 2018). In this study, rather than distinguishing the sets of norms that may characterize different classroom settings or documenting change over time, we aim to explore how norms and expectations might differ within the same classroom and with the same teacher, depending on whether a particular technological tool is being used. We also aim to challenge the view of dichotomous classroom norms (e.g., traditional versus reform-oriented) (Boaler & Greeno, 2000). Student Spotlight: Bruce Screws [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/366e042c-72da-483f-aa4f-957e2ef246a4.png] Name: Bruce Screws Hometown: Tallahassee, FL Program: Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies (Ed.D.) Though I was born and raised in Tallahassee, FL, I have been teaching at Incheon National University in South Korea for the past four years. Living outside the U.S. informs my research interests; I am interested in how learners from different international backgrounds interact with educational systems. After I graduate, I want to repatriate to the United States and continue my career in academia. About the Program: Florida State University's top-ranked Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies program offers a master's degree (on campus and online), two doctoral degrees (an online Ed.D. for scholar-practitioners and an on-campus Ph.D. for future researchers and faculty members), and three graduate certificates. Our curriculum prepares students to solve complex learning and performance problems across diverse settings, including business, higher education, healthcare, government, military, and K-12 environments. Our graduates are highly sought-after professionals who become leaders in the areas of instructional design, performance improvement, and learning technologies. DIRECTO facilitates the incorporation of diversity and inclusion projects, teaching methods, and higher education life at FSU. About the Program: The Visual Disabilities program prepares teachers to work with children who are blind or who have low vision and orientation and mobility specialists who have the competency to teach travel skills to all individuals with visual impairments. Through development of strategies to teach essential skills needed for adult success and support of these students in their academic programs, graduates find immediate employment in school and agency positions-positions that they find both challenging and personally satisfying.
