This online course is a synthesis of important themes relevant to learning, cognition, and instruction, including lifespan development, human cognition, theories of learning and instruction, motivation and emotion, and family support for children. The research supporting theory and practice will be evaluated with respect to implications on instructional practices.

EDF 5681: Special Topics: Urban and Rural Schools

This course examines education within the context of urban and rural school settings. As a result of completing this course, students will examine the issues that affect academic success for students in both urban and rural school settings; value the importance of knowing students' cultural backgrounds (e.g., race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.); demonstrate how to effectively plan and implement systemic interventions that improve academic achievement and school engagement for vulnerable populations (e.g., African American males, first generation college going rural students, Latinx) in rural and urban school settings; examine the role(s) of school personnel and their impact on students in urban and rural settings; demonstrate how to effectively use school and community resources to facilitate students' learning as well as develop partnerships with community agencies and students' families; and design a plan to prepare students from urban and rural settings for postsecondary opportunities.

The purpose of this online course is to introduce and analyze the essential concepts and knowledge concerned with the discipline of ethics as it relates to the extensive and evolving demands of managing and coaching sports and activities. You will utilize a variety of research materials to investigate traditional schools of thought and academic theory regarding ethics as well as develop the rudiments for constructing your individual philosophy of coaching. Upon completion of the course, you'll be able to understand the importance of ethics; apply personal knowledge and best practice guidelines to create a philosophy of coaching; analyze and discuss various ethical scenarios that might arise in coaching and administration; evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of differing strategies for assessing ethical situations; and create strategies for addressing ethical situations.
