Name: Seyda Uysal
Hometown: Isparta, Turkey
Program: Mathematics Education

Seyda is a Ph.D. student from Turkey and works as a graduate research assistant. Her major is Curriculum and Instruction with a major in Mathematics Education. Her enthusiasm for pursuing her graduate studies in mathematics education is rooted in her quest for satisfactory answers to some questions pertaining to the learning of students from diverse backgrounds in transition to higher education. Seyda's current research interests lay in affective factors in secondary-tertiary transition experiences of undergraduate students majoring in mathematics. Also, as part of her involvement in the game-based learning project "E-Rebuild," she is exploring potential contributions of digital games to student dispositions towards learning mathematics.

About the Program:
Interdisciplinary collaborations and scaffolded teaching and research apprenticeships are features of Florida State University's Mathematics Education<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ZlL5uVOXZ6J6F0IirxgihwQACfCCSUM6NSe7saIkXOPdsW_x277DDfrVevZbb-vA6iQOJihOl-3sLdRMSK9Jzvem-6Gx9LtTCKpIEmxTGRAq4qvFO_SASjPZ6TOJ3uyV8ftlkwAJOHF-FyNBQzDjYg513UU3E51ScS2biUGS-Ubw_F1TeY_CIHWxuimCB0sm4yeipNCmeDgS0cJgAZaRCrUxPMLKL_NO_gSRIouuGS16JGgKJA4pF5Q7q7R6PhXtOCJfrtqCJ0spgvm0DWkxeV7swFu1I908XKGWBlDa8njjN4dwz3SMKg==&c=cWmE-r-nDhhjOPtLmb4pCDRpjMbW0KQxAZsBV11eoEPmBuh4yWh-wQ==&ch=25NRv2C7Wi6d1tEbukQLbFATEzT9iLsQkeFSzGltefSvQPMo1fcFVg==__;!!PhOWcWs!iAEUeshauRlGJIKBWfKEQKbXqXKX_XcZNGGSP8xmVo8aBOA5_4O2tvZLBdwoupE$> program in the PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. The program is designed for students to be successful in this content-focused and research intensive major. Through interactions between faculty and students there are opportunities to focus on current issues of research and practice. Through courses students in the program are exposed to a broad view of the landscape of mathematics education with a common focus on the consideration of teachers' professional growth across a variety of contexts, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which teachers attend to student thinking to support the learning of all.

Creativity is Connecting Things: Transdisciplinary Integration in Higher Education
Tuesday, February 25
4:00 PM
Bradley Reading Room Strozier Library

A recent National Academies report, "Branches From the Same Tree" (2018), examines the integration of the humanities and arts with sciences, engineering, and medicine in higher education, urging greater experimentation and investment in boundary-crossing pathways and programs to better prepare students for work, life, and citizenship. As a member of the report committee, Dr. Youngmoo Kim will share experiences and perspectives from the document and the process, which also informs his efforts at the ExCITe Center of Drexel University to foster integration and collaboration across academic disciplines. In particular, he will focus on unique arts-technology collaborations with external partners: the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, and Parsons Dance. Each of these projects has its own objectives and outcomes, from PhD research to STEAM (STEM+Arts) education programs for K-12 students, but are shaped by our transdisciplinary approach to collaboration.

National Eating Disorders Awareness (NEDA) Week
Thursday, February 27
4:00 - 7:00 PM
The Leach

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (#NEDAwareness) aims to improve public understanding of eating disorders and their causes, dangers, and treatments in hopes to empower everyone to reduce risk factors and join eating disorder prevention efforts. Specifically, we want to focus on challenging diet culture to promote a more body positive and inclusive college campus at FSU.

Being on a college campus amongst a population that is highly susceptible to eating disorders and negative body-talk, this event is especially important to us. This year, the National Eating Disorders Association is using the phrase "Come as You Are!" to help promote body acceptance and encourage body positivity.

Join the movement as we accept our bodies, respect others' bodies, and let's work together to end the stigma around getting help. #NEDAwareness
