Student Spotlight: Mike Mesa

The College of Education is home to some truly incredible students. In recognition of this, we wanted to spotlight some of the students who make the College of Education a special place in this regularly occurring feature.

Name: Mike Mesa
Hometown: Miami, FL
Program: Learning & Cognition (Ph.D.)

Mike's research interests include examining the factors related to maximization of the outcomes to participation in language/literacy instruction, including classroom management, peer effects, and culturally relevant pedagogy. Michael was a recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award in 2018 and is currently a Graduate Assistant at the Florida Center of Reading Research and COE Office of Research. Additionally, he mentors PURPOSE fellows conducting research in FAMU DRS Freedom Schools.

Our students come from many backgrounds to apply Learning and Cognition in research, classroom, government, or organizational settings. Our program is highly individualized, providing the flexibility to select the training that meets their needs. Our program provides an excellent grounding in research and our students have close working relationships with faculty who are nationally and internationally known for their research expertise.

"Little Pink House" film screening
Tuesday, February 4

Askew Student Life Building, ASLC Cinema

"Little Pink House" is a feature film describing the trials experienced by Susette Kelo as her local government in Connecticut tried to seize her property for private land development. The case went to the U.S. Supreme Court and triggered a nationwide movement to rein in local government eminent domain powers. The 2017 film was written and directed by Courtney Balaker and stars  Catherine Keener.  It has won or been nominated for numerous film festival awards.

4:30 pm - Discussion on filmmaking and storytelling, "Making Movies That Matter," with producer and Korchula Productions co-founder Ted Balaker, moderated by Samuel R. Staley, Director of the DeVoe Moore Center
6:00 pm - Film screening
7:45 pm - Panel discussion on narrative film, property rights and urban redevelopment, "Private Property Rights, Urban Development and Kelo vs. City of New London," featuring:

The Department of Sociology presents a talk by Mieke B. Thomeer, professor of sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

This colloquium clarifies a wide range of experiences that transgender and gender nonconforming people distinguish as important to their identities. By analyzing personal narratives and lived experiences, Dr. Thomeer's work demonstrates how insight into key events can also illuminate the often hidden, multilevel processes through which gender is socially produced and entrenched.
A reception will follow in the Pepper Center lobby.
This event is supported by Lawrence Klar Projects.

Dr. Cameron Beatty, assistant professor of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College, Dr. King's alma mater. The Collegium of Scholars consists of academic, scholars and professors whose research, writing, teaching and mentoring across a variety of disciplines promote and support advancement towards peace through moral responsibility. Dr. Beatty will be inducted into the Collegium in March.
