I was able to talk with the professors here prior to applying to ensure I would be able to research what I wanted and work on the subjects that would further my own career ambitions. I also liked that I could get a certificate in Institutional Research while working on my degree, so I am even more marketable when I?ve graduated. My research focuses on how living in on-campus housing impacts students? experiences at college/university. After graduation, I would like to be back in a higher education - or higher education-adjacent - setting, working to better the experiences of undergraduate students. Whether that is through Academic or Student Affairs still remains to be seen. Have news to share? We'd love to hear from you! Thomeer, professor of sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This colloquium clarifies a wide range of experiences that transgender and gender nonconforming people distinguish as important to their identities. By analyzing personal narratives and lived experiences, Dr. Thomeer's work demonstrates how insight into key events can also illuminate the often hidden, multilevel processes through which gender is socially produced and entrenched. A reception will follow in the Pepper Center lobby. As a member of the report committee, Dr. Youngmoo Kim will share experiences and perspectives from the document and the process, which also informs his efforts at the ExCITe Center of Drexel University to foster integration and collaboration across academic disciplines. In particular, he will focus on unique arts-technology collaborations with external partners: the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, and Parsons Dance. Each of these projects has its own objectives and outcomes, from PhD research to STEAM (STEM+Arts) education programs for K-12 students, but are shaped by our transdisciplinary approach to collaboration. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Got an event you'd like to promote to your fellow COE students? Her major is Curriculum and Instruction with a major in Mathematics Education. Her enthusiasm for pursuing her graduate studies in mathematics education is rooted in her quest for satisfactory answers to some questions pertaining to the learning of students from diverse backgrounds in transition to higher education. Seyda's current research interests lay in affective factors in secondary-tertiary transition experiences of undergraduate students majoring in mathematics. Also, as part of her involvement in the game-based learning project "E-Rebuild," she is exploring potential contributions of digital games to student dispositions towards learning mathematics. About the Program: Interdisciplinary collaborations and scaffolded teaching and research apprenticeships are features of Florida State University's Mathematics Education program in the PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. The program is designed for students to be successful in this content-focused and research intensive major. Through interactions between faculty and students there are opportunities to focus on current issues of research and practice. Through courses students in the program are exposed to a broad view of the landscape of mathematics education with a common focus on the consideration of teachers' professional growth across a variety of contexts, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which teachers attend to student thinking to support the learning of all. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/35f4b0fb-6537-421e-ac3d-7eb7f54fb353.jpg] Vertigo Wednesday, February 26 8:00 PM Askew Student Life Building Considered by many to be the greatest film of all time, Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo is a mind-blowing masterpiece. Specifically, we want to focus on challenging diet culture to promote a more body positive and inclusive college campus at FSU. Being on a college campus amongst a population that is highly susceptible to eating disorders and negative body-talk, this event is especially important to us. This year, the National Eating Disorders Association is using the phrase "Come as You Are!" to help promote body acceptance and encourage body positivity. Join the movement as we accept our bodies, respect others' bodies, and let's work together to end the stigma around getting help. #NEDAwareness -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/701b21a5-aa6e-4218-bfed-7d15657f63af.jpg] Gif It Up, Florida!
