Originally, I wanted to get a PhD in Mathematics Education. However, after talking with the Math Education advisor, she directed me to Dr. Turner. The rest is history! I am interested in the academic success of Black males at all levels, but my current study is focused on Black male PhDs in STEM fields who work in universities or university research settings. Overall, my interest stems from my 17 years of experience as a secondary math and science educator, most of that time in Title 1 schools. I noticed the dearth of Black males in advanced STEM courses, but I personally knew Black males that had the ability to be successful in those courses. I know there are successful Black males in STEM and other fields. I want to identify what contributes to the success of Black males at the highest level of education and use that knowledge to place more Black males in the STEM pipeline. In terms of plans for after graduation, I'm still thinking about it. Part of me wants to work in teacher education to prepare the next generation of educators, but another part wants to work in education policy at the state level. Knowing me, I'll find a way to do both! Have news to share? ?We'd love to hear from you! Submit News Follow us on social media for the latest COE news and updates! #FSUCOE [Facebook] ? [Twitter] ? After graduating from Florida A&M University with a degree in Chemistry and teaching at local schools in town, I wanted to take my focus on service and community a step further and broaden my influence. I earned my Master's of Social Work from the FSU College of Social Work with a focus in Social Leadership and Policy, making the move to a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Evaluation - a natural marriage of my interests. With internships and fellowships with policy organizations such as The Children's Campaign and the ACLU, I have always committed to making sure those in our communities understand the often cumbersome language of policy in ways that clearly outline the impacts on their lives. My current research interests involve the privatization of public education, and clearly outlining how such moves toward less oversight impact Black students. About the Education Policy & Evaluation Program Students who complete the Education Policy and Evaluation graduate program go on to make an impact in local, state and national educational institutions and agencies. With a strong understanding of pressing educational policy issues, our graduates influence generations of future students. Our Education Policy and Evaluation graduate program trains you to develop, implement, analyze and evaluate federal, state and local educational policies. Students investigate avenues such as charter schools, urban education reform, school finance, teacher quality, accountability, diversity, to name a few. We offer both a master's (M.S.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) program in Education Policy and Evaluation. In the master's program, students gain an understanding of current issues facing the field. The doctoral program focuses on creating a unique research and advancing educational policy conversations. Regardless of which education policy graduate program you choose, you'll be well equipped for a meaningful career. Due to the current pandemic and the extra safety measures that teachers are taking to keep their classrooms safe, this wish list may look a little different than a typical list of school supplies. All items can be purchased directly through the Amazon wish list at the link below. Additionally, when checking out, please be sure to select the address containing "ATTN: Jeanette Villa" for delivery. Ms. Villa is our contact at Woodville School and will be collecting the items on behalf of all teachers. View the full wish list on Amazon at bit.ly/woodville-supplies. You can also share the attached flyer with your network to spread the word!
