The rigorous academic environment, esteemed faculty, and the combined-degree, state-approved nature of the program were influential factors in my decision to choose the COE. My time here has only exceeded my expectations. The COE has afforded me multiple opportunities to grow personally and professionally. I am the President of FSU?s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi and I serve on the Elementary Education Student Advisory Board. However, the most influential aspect of the COE has been my field experiences, particularly in Gadsden County. I discovered that I thrive as a teacher in high-needs settings and multiculturally, economically disadvantaged areas, and I later translated my experiences into a research project presented at a conference. Outside of the COE, my minor in Family and Child Sciences transformed my teaching practices and career goals. I seized opportunity to research with one of my instructors who has since become a faculty member at the University of Southern Mississippi. For the past two years, we have published multiple presentations and manuscripts on the topics of childhood maltreatment and protective factors in children?s traumatic stress recoveries. I have applied this to my teaching and I aim to contribute to the field of education through my research in trauma-informed teaching. After graduating this semester, I will return next year to complete the master's portion of my program and then obtain a teaching position in a high-needs school setting. I will continue my research while teaching, with my ultimate goal being to obtain a doctoral degree and enter into higher education so that I can help prepare the next generation of educators. I am the founder of Rooted Resistance, LLC, a grassroots-based community program that is committed to creating accessible, functional movement for Queer and Trans* people in the American rural South. I come to this work as a former student-athlete and grassroots organizer. I am pursing my Ph.D. in the Department of Sport Management with a focus on combining work in critical theory with history and geography to examine the racial ecologies of sport and to understand and build more livable futures for queer and trans Black, Indigenous, and people of color (QTBIPOC). My research interests include indigeneity, queer and trans life, speculative fiction, physical cultural studies and the active moving body. The extensiveness of knowledge that our department's faculty has and their encouragement to develop my own line of inquiry still remain the reasons I chose FSU's Sport Management program. About the Program: Our sport management program teaches business skills, facility and event management, marketing and promotion, field research and more. Supported by renowned faculty members, you will gain hands-on experience and mentorship. What separates us from other sport management programs is the close relationships with many successful alumni and sport organizations. These connections provide professional experience for our students in various forms (graduate assistantships, internship/volunteer partnerships, class/conference speakers, etc.). These factors have helped Florida State earn the title of "Best Sport Management Master's" in the U.S. from College Choice. The course will cover several research traditions and influential approaches to modeling cognition and learning, focusing in particular on STEM disciplines. We will discuss the models' main features and underlying assumptions, engage in critical analysis of accounts of cognition, compare and contrast across models, and examine evidence that supports or challenges the models. We will examine how models of mind inform how researchers study students' reasoning and learning in STEM, including in the kinds of research questions they ask, the ways in which they pursue them, and their implications for instruction and assessment. We will supplement theoretical discussions with data to examine the affordances and constraints of various models in accounting for patterns and variabilities in students' reasoning. If you have any questions or want to learn more about the course, please feel free to email Dr. Lama Jaber at ljaber at fsu.edu.
