Join us Friday, September 20, in Stone Building Room G-151 from 1:00-2:00 pm. The talk features Dr. Lindsay Dennis, associate professor of Elementary and Special Education. Her talk is called "Literacy and Language Development for Preschool Children with or At-Risk for Disabilities."

ABSTRACT: Two studies will be presented. Study 1 is a repeated acquisition (RA) design comparing the effectiveness of research-based instruction embedded in repeated storybook reading facilitated by an adult or tablet application (app) on the vocabulary knowledge of six preschool children. Study 2 is a multiple probe design exploring the effects of professional development (PD) on preschool teachers' abilities to implement evidence-based (EB) book-reading strategies with fidelity and the subsequent effects of EB book-reading strategies on children's expressive vocabulary. Findings from both studies will add to our understanding of best practice for supporting the language/literacy development of preschool children with or at-risk for disabilities.
The talk will last ~30 minutes, followed by a discussion featuring questions and ideas from the attendees. Pizza will be provided, but feel free to bring your own lunches!

The Center for Leadership & Social Change, in partnership with the President's Council on Diversity and Inclusion, Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and the Latinx Faculty Staff Network, is proud to host Florida State University's Latinx Cultural Celebration.

The Latinx Cultural Celebration is designed to pay tribute to the generations of Latinx Americans who have positively affected our historical, political, economic, and/or social context in the United States. The goal of the cultural celebration is to bring the university and Tallahassee communities together to enhance our cultural awareness, increase our knowledge of significant contributions, and share untold stories of the Latinx community.

Welcome to the Garden Party

Seminole Organic Garden

Join us on September 19th from 5-7pm for our Welcome to the Garden Party! Our party will be potluck style and everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share. (The more food, the better!) Also, be sure to bring your own plates and utensils as we hope to have this event be waste free. We will have trivia and other garden games to play while we get to know each other! We hope to see you there!

Sarah Gonzalez (Special Education B.S./M.S.) started a job as an information specialist at the Florida Council for Exceptional Children. As part of her responsibilities, Gonzalez will track and update the organization on legislation that affects students with disabilities.
