I graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.A. in Integrated Strategic Communication. When researching graduate programs, I knew that I wanted to be involved in sport. FSU has the best Sport Management program in the country that places graduates in their dream jobs and when I came to visit, I felt right at home. I knew instantly that there was no better place for me to further my education. I am exposed to a variety of opportunities in the sports industry through this program. While at FSU, I?ve had the opportunity to intern with our Sports Information department, working specifically with men?s basketball. Communications/PR is something I am very interested in, so being able to combine that with my passion for sport is a dream come true! Over the summer, I had the opportunity to intern with NBC Sports in their communications department which allowed me to experience a more corporate side of communications. After graduation, I plan on returning to New York City and pursuing a career in sports Public Relations. Have news to share? We'd love to hear from you! The talk features Dr. Lindsay Dennis, associate professor of Elementary and Special Education. Her talk is called "Literacy and Language Development for Preschool Children with or At-Risk for Disabilities." ABSTRACT: Two studies will be presented. Study 1 is a repeated acquisition (RA) design comparing the effectiveness of research-based instruction embedded in repeated storybook reading facilitated by an adult or tablet application (app) on the vocabulary knowledge of six preschool children. Study 2 is a multiple probe design exploring the effects of professional development (PD) on preschool teachers' abilities to implement evidence-based (EB) book-reading strategies with fidelity and the subsequent effects of EB book-reading strategies on children's expressive vocabulary. Findings from both studies will add to our understanding of best practice for supporting the language/literacy development of preschool children with or at-risk for disabilities. The talk will last ~30 minutes, followed by a discussion featuring questions and ideas from the attendees. Pizza will be provided, but feel free to bring your own lunches! The drive will begin Monday, September 16 and will continue through October 4. If anyone is interested in giving monetary donations, the group will go shopping to get essential supplies so they can be shipped by boat to the Bahamas. In looking at pictures and speaking with some of the residents in the Bahamas, everything is needed. The island was destroyed and most stores are unable to open due to the devastation. The exercise develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of students' capacities to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience. Doctoral students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their dissertation topic and its significance. 3MT? is not an exercise in trivializing or 'dumbing-down' research but forces students to consolidate their ideas and crystalize their research discoveries. All 3MT? Finalists will receive a certificate and a $100 award and are eligible for one of the three awards: 1st Place ($1,000), 2nd Place ($750), and the People's Choice ($500) selected by the audience.
