FSU’s Great Give is a 36-hour online giving campaign in support of academic programs, scholarships and student activities at Florida State University. Supporters can make gifts from 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 28 until the campaign ends at 9 p.m. on Friday, March 29 on FSU’s crowdfunding site sparkFSU<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__r20.rs6.net_tn.jsp-3Ff-3D001T4tarIF6H5YftqBkbfYciVxvnFhpJfXtzXz-5FmiIRAHHJ5T4fhM0t6ENxfn19fIIo4n6JD8E-5FaPJ2F2bKY41ZpuOOkMtRD9tPy82iwrlDx-2DE3Co8Xyayt5QI0nbFpt-5FkN2Xr2HQDprvs-3D-26c-3DH1AMhk1ay2PjGbdZK2cHITikd8SmgQ-2DqLNe-2DPEdUJxWxj5AoBS5sWQ-3D-3D-26ch-3D3wJy-5FFzLeGmjf-2D4B1uSFhgAcg4pTMyGKMxexrsWKduwYrP09T-5FSkLA-3D-3D&d=DwMFaQ&c=HPMtquzZjKY31rtkyGRFnQ&r=DNcBAK6fo5dGKqWpJtKi47tGxtRSULmy-61evpQSHl2ibMZ5AACjktXwLgv2NQj-&m=YH43aEPBCDKzqlgRX6E3ZJHXcYvQvkW_4nRPZpgtCcI&s=yzQIPqKcoS5NEDmOKIcJWwXIzEtbzGmOAfCMrlYSpDM&e=>.

This year, the College of Education will be raising funds for three projects:

· Debt-Free Teachers - $4,000
· New teachers today face greater challenges than ever before. They enter their classrooms with the stress of ever-changing performance metrics, a lack of job security, increased safety concerns, and low salaries. College of Education alumni and friends can help them enter their careers free from debt by providing scholarship support now. Our alumni and friends have created the most generous College of Education scholarship program in the state of Florida, yet with over 220 scholarships awarded this year, we have only reached 12% of our student body. Your gift to the College of Education Scholarship Program will help ensure that our teachers enter the classroom focused on their students, not on their student loans.

· Hardee Center - Cohort Challenge - $3,500 from 100 Donors
· The Hardee Center produces exceptional leaders in Higher Education through instruction, student affairs assistantships, and the unique practicum experience of the Higher Education program. For the second year in a row, we encourage alumni to show their support of the Hardee Center and FSU through the Hardee Center - Cohort Challenge! In the spirit of the Hardee Center’s Life Net, show your pride in your cohort and help support the next generation of Higher Education leaders during the Great Give!

· The Sport Management Student Association (SMSA) - $2,500 from 250 Donors
· The Sport Management Student Association will lead a student, friend, and family participation drive to encourage support for sports related service opportunities, community engagement, and networking trips. SMSA provides opportunities for over 100 student members of the nation’s top ranked Sport Management program to gain valuable experience outside the classroom interacting with the teams and organizations where they may one day work.

Mark your calendar for the Great Give March 28th – 29th and help us meet our challenges or choose another fund that is important to you.

Florida State’s Learning Systems Institute entered a collaborative agreement with the Bayero University-Kano in May 2017 to form the center aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to provide high-quality education and improve childrens’ reading skills.

“It was an honor to have the Nigerian delegation with us for a week,” said Stephanie Zuilkowski, associate professor of international and multicultural education at Florida State. “We’ve been working with Bayero University-Kano for several years on our USAID-funded project to develop the Nigerian Center for Reading Research, and we look forward to continuing this partnership.”

Spread the Word: Inclusion

Spread the Word is a global engagement campaign to increase inclusion amongst people with and without and developmental disabilities through grassroots action. In schools, workplaces, and communities around the world, local leaders are taking a pledge to create socially inclusive places to learn, work, and live.

FSU is encouraging people to sign a pledge to building a more inclusive community for all people with and without intellectual disability. Six Ways to Know If You Are Culturally and Linguistically Responsive

The phrase “culturally and linguistically responsive” has now become cliché, the death knell in education. Cultural responsiveness benefits all students, in particular those students who have been traditionally underserved in the United States’ schools. Given its importance to empowering and inspiring educators to be responsive and for students to be academically successful, how do you know if you are culturally and linguistically responsive in your mindset and skill set? Find out through a motivating, inspiring, and thought-provoking keynote address from Dr. Sharroky Hollie.

COE Student Spotlight: Melanie Dammel

Hometown: Englewood, FL
Major: Sport Management (Ph.D.)

I chose FSU because I felt supported throughout the whole application process. After the first communication with the department head through the campus visit, the faculty all seemed genuinely interested in helping me succeed and the current students I spoke with all seemed happy in the department and more like a family than a cohort.

I was also drawn to the department as there was a focus on the sociology of sport. I’m interested in researching sport for development and peace, the importance of play in society, physical and health education curriculum, and sport for marginalized populations. My advisor researches the effects of sport beyond economics to include the political, cultural and social impacts sport makes on society. I connected with this as sport was never about the money for me. I also appreciated the department’s focus on both the positive and negative impacts that sport makes, as acknowledging the negative impacts is a step towards making positive change and using sport as a tool to help people throughout their lives, just as it has done for me.

My time at FSU has shown me that there are even more opportunities in sport than I had previously imagined. I can see myself going back into the industry in an event production, research or administrative capacity or teaching at the collegiate level. The dream would be to combine the two and take a position as full-time teaching faculty, while working contract positions in the sport and entertainment world while concurrently providing consulting and program evaluation for non-profit sport organizations.
