Degrees of Discovery: The History of Science at Florida State

Monday, June 19, 2017 - December 28, 2017
11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Dodd Hall (DOD), FSU Heritage Museum

This exhibit examines the history of science at Florida State University, tracking the school's development from early educational institution to 21st century research facility. Since the late 19th century, science has served as a fundamental aspect of education at Florida State University and its predecessors. After World War II, a surplus of wartime laboratory equipment and veterans allowed FSU to meet the increasing demand for science education across the country. Early programs focusing on physical sciences laid the groundwork for the development of advanced courses in a variety of fields, including meteorology, oceanography, chemistry, and physics. The creation of innovative research facilities offered new avenues for interdisciplinary collaboration and continues to encourage scientists from around the world to take advantage of the advanced technologies offered on and around the Tallahassee campus.

COE Spotlight: Curriculum & Instruction - Elementary Education

Students choose to pursue a graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Elementary Education<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ShMbKOw1kLXrOU_NYyi5YbWFibj3DQoxZB-wnuNOd7aZ2scgFYY8EIZa8wURDaezl9UjecxVl2d2U9_GOnfj5Kc5SB2svhv2_tTmPGuBwcHogj5rSODRcgCWqh1BG8hLne90kopMFwJy_fvQaTadpGpkGWuLhEVNv-o-9k0CEkQz9mL-2u2m3P0jYyoOm_M76ZuMnZqf7C0rcbIu-Tua4FBikcLwgqj4pKibp_7t8N-49mYUmFPbQwXS1HFwrfGZNdoKLn6Ijgs8mUqTc4HoVw==&c=iRXzzICoJjTq9xvzvjaoFPLzwAlY57wmINBR_HlHZdOVT0SQSL7lww==&ch=k9s__yhxXqBFanuHKLqNJYUHDNIAbWI_uhBBjIj7Q7ddGPSHiZThHg==> for several reasons. Foremost, our highly accomplished faculty have strong backgrounds in their respective subject areas and value close-working relationships. They want nothing more than to see their students succeed. Classes are small, so students can easily form friendships and study groups. We offer a small school atmosphere rarely found at a major research university, which provides our students with very unique and valuable classroom experiences. We offer an online master's degree as well as on-campus specialist and doctoral degrees to students who already hold a Professional Educator's Certificate. Learn more about one of our current students, Meredith, below!

Name: Meredith Higgins
Major/Year: Elementary Education, doctoral
Hometown: Tallahassee, Florida

"My research is focused on practicing educators' ethical violations and pre-service teacher's ethics training in Florida. This important topic can improve teacher effectiveness and retention by helping educators understand their responsibilities to the profession. Educator ethics became of interest to me through teaching the Ethics and Legal Studies course to the undergraduate students in the Elementary Education program. My goal is to ensure that all of our students become successful, ethical educators."

COE Resources: Adult Learning Evaluation Center (ALEC)

The Adult Learning Evaluation Center (ALEC) provides psychoeducational evaluations for college students and other adults who may be experiencing scholastic difficulties due to a learning disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and/or other mental health difficulties (e.g., depression, anxiety, bipolar, autism, etc.) that may negatively affect one's academic performance. ALEC also provides ADHD coaching services to assist students in achieving their goals by developing skills and strategies to compensate for areas of functioning affected by ADHD or poorly developed study skills.

ALEC is open Monday through Friday from 8:30-5:00 and is located in Room 2207 of the Stone Building. To learn more, visit http://education.fsu.edu/alec<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ShMbKOw1kLXrOU_NYyi5YbWFibj3DQoxZB-wnuNOd7aZ2scgFYY8EAY6yla1mmoqVHgsVyzz4Qt5t8B8oRtzvrPpqAiH9Eytvr5bBdUQwfuXff91woBZXynNTlrnN9DNydp8uqU0SwxLn_cFYlikFS-AoyoBfuW6SVm4sMp3IjmLWVWljAUmbQ==&c=iRXzzICoJjTq9xvzvjaoFPLzwAlY57wmINBR_HlHZdOVT0SQSL7lww==&ch=k9s__yhxXqBFanuHKLqNJYUHDNIAbWI_uhBBjIj7Q7ddGPSHiZThHg==>.

The only facility of its kind in the United States, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) is the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world. Every year, more than a thousand scientists from dozens of countries come to use our unique magnets with the support of highly experienced staff scientists and technicians. Thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida, these researchers use our facilities for free, probing fundamental questions about materials, energy and life. Their findings result in more than 400 scientific publications a year in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature, Science and Physical Review Letters.
