Subject: [socfac] FSU Symposium on Education & Hip Hop (SOCIOLOGY SPONSORED)
Importance: High

TO: Faculty, Students, & Staff – Lisa Weinberg and Andrew Mannheimer have worked very hard to organize a symposium on Education and Hip Hop this week that includes an on-campus symposium and two free showings of a movie by the Curators of Hip Hop, plus a concert at The Side Bar. I hope you will attend and invite your students and other interested persons. The department is helping as one sponsor. Information is below, and a flier is attached that I hope you will distribute far and wide. Thanks!

Hi Everyone,
Andrew Mannheimer and I have had the privilege through our Sociology of Hip Hop course, to meet wonderful people who are working to make change in their communities and around the world. We have partnered with The Curators of Hip Hop to organize a fantastic set of events this week. We would like to extend an invitation for you to join us!
Community Book Drive
On Wednesday (February 19th) Tallahassee Parks and Recreations and The Curators of Hip Hop Ambassador Program present “Our Culture, Our History” at the Jack L. McLean Community Center (700 Paul Russell Road) from 6-9 pm. There will be food samples, free books, live musical performances, poetry, art, and African cuisine. You may have noticed the donation box outside of the Sociology Office in Bellamy. Please contribute any type of books that you have to donate since they are for children of “all ages.” [We will pick up the box on Wednesday.]
Symposium on Hip Hop and Education
On Thursday (February 20th) we will have a Symposium on Hip Hop and Education in The Center for Global and Multicultural Engagement (“The Globe”) Auditorium, between 3-5pm. The aim of the HHE 2014 is to provide a platform for researchers, educators, community leaders, policy makers, artists and cultural producers to present their ideas and practices and to further develop and encourage activities in Hip Hop and Education.
Invited Panelists include:

Niteisha Clark, City Parks and Rec Afterschool Supervisor

Dee-1, Recording Artist and Educator

Honors English, FAMU Professor and Artist

Jermaine Fletcher, the Curators of Hip Hop

Adrian Dickey, Publicist

Angelyn Hirai, Florida State University Schools Music Educator

Major Lewis Johnson, Tallahassee Police Department

            Tanza, R&B Artist and Entrepreneur

Concert
Thursday evening (February 20th) , you are invited to a show at The Side Bar (809 Railroad Ave), with our very own Yt opening for Dee-1. Additional acts include Vintage Tux, Honors English, Matt Reeves (NY), Prie (HA) and Organic Geniuses (MA), among others. Finally, on Friday, 2/21, we have arranged two free showings of the Curators of Hip Hop’s film in the FSU Student Life Cinema at Noon and 6:30 pm.
Film Screening
Friday (February 21st) you are invited to a free film screening of “The Curators Volume 1: A Story of Independence.” A true hip hop tale, this film presents the stories of five emcees, spanning Hawaii to New York, from the artist’s perspective, and demonstrates the power of dedication leading to endless possibilities. The film will be shown at 12:00 pm and at 6 pm in the Student Life Cinema Theater.

Contact me (lweinberg at fsu.edu<mailto:lweinberg at fsu.edu>) or Andrew (ahm08 at fsu.edu<mailto:ahm08 at fsu.edu>) if we can answer any questions about these events. You can also find more information about the performers and event details on the FSU Sociology of Hip Hop Culture Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SociologyofHipHopFSU.
