Good news!

The university finally? switched out the old nasty desks in CAR 106. Those desks were an emergency replacement for the lack of furniture when the building opened after renovations. Ever since I have been negotiating and advocating for new desks. Today is that day!

We now have these futuristic, perfect for rearranging the students for small groups, all tablet trays
can be right or left-handed, and they have storage underneath for bags, etc. They accommodate a range of body types, sizes, and
other needs.

In these pictures there are 25 seats. The crew brought in the rest after this - we now have an actual total of 32 seats. These are also used in other
buildings, namely William Johnston.

Each desk costs approx. $600. Please remind your students to treat them well. We want them to be around for thirty years!

Please forward this email to all Spring 2024 instructional faculty and staff.



The University?s mandatory First Day Non-Attendance Drop policy is in effect for the first week of Spring 2024 classes. The use of different delivery methods for Spring 2024 classes does not remove this requirement. Dropping students for first day non-attendance is necessary in order for the university to remain in compliance with Federal Financial Aid regulations (and students expect it). This policy requires all faculty and instructional staff to take attendance at the first class meeting of the semester. This policy is non-discretionary and applies to all classes, regardless of campus, space availability in the class, delivery method, course level, and/or academic unit offering the class.



As a reminder, ?attendance? means making contact with the instructor as specified by the instructor at the start of the term. There are a number of ways this contact can be achieved. One way instructors can take first day attendance is via their Canvas course site(s). Please see First Day Attendance in Canvas<https://support.canvas.fsu.edu/kb/article/810-first-day-attendance-in-canvas/> for more information and options. If you use Canvas to satisfy the first day attendance requirement, please note that you still need to report your first day non-attendance drops as directed below.



Methods for reporting and processing non-attendance drops:

        3. Email -- Send a message to registrar at admin.fsu.edu<mailto:registrar at admin.fsu.edu>. Please include the student's name, EMPLID, the course prefix and number and the class section number. Staff will be monitoring this email closely and will be processing drops up until midnight on the 4th day of classes (Thursday, 11 January 2024).



        4. myFSU Mobile -- Check and submit first-day attendance via the mobile version of Faculty Center. Simply download the myFSU Mobile app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play and follow these instructions (for now): How to Submit First Day Attendance via myFSU Mobile<http://sc.my.fsu.edu/faculty/how/use-myfsu-mobile-access-faculty-center-and-take-attendance>.



5th Day Classes and Non-attendance Drops:



Once drop/add closes on Thursday, 11 January 2024, faculty will still be able to use the attendance tool for their Friday (12 January) classes. Please take attendance in any class that meets for the first time on Friday,

12 January 2024.



Additional Information



We are no longer processing administrative cancellation requests on the fifth day of classes. Students that need to drop all of their classes will need to be directed to the Withdrawal Services Office.

Robert B. Bradley Library Research Grants Application Deadline February 21, 2023
This announcement is an invitation to faculty to apply for the annual Robert B. Bradley Library Research Grants, which support the research and creative endeavors of our faculty while developing our library?s world class collections. Bob Bradley (retired VP for Planning and Programs at FSU) has been a longtime supporter of the University Libraries, and he has advocated consistently for resources to support the centrality of the libraries that play such an important role in the scholarly work of our faculty.

For Spring 2024 the Faculty Senate Library Committee has a remaining fund of $34,000 to support the research and creative work of faculty with new library acquisitions accessible for the whole FSU community.

The deadline to submit applications for 2023-2024 Bradleys is Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

FSU Research Development is excited to announce back-to-back virtual workshops in February to support grants activity in the Arts and Humanities.  These workshops will feature program officers from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)<https://www.arts.gov/grants/grants-for-arts-projects/> and Florida Humanities<https://floridahumanities.org/> speaking on the ?Grants for Arts Project (GAP)? and ?Challenge America? programs and the ?Community Projects Grants? program, respectively.  While these program officers will present a broad overview of their programs, the workshops are primarily intended to provide an opportunity for FSU faculty to get direct feedback on their own project ideas. Colleagues:

It is time to begin the annual evaluation process for faculty. Just as in years past, this process includes submitting your evidence of performance over the past calendar year (Spring 2023, Summer 2023, Fall 2023) and your current FEAS CV.

This year you have the option to submit the usual EOP Worksheet (attached) or you can submit a CV customized specifically for the annual evaluation generated in FEAS (instructions attached).

University policy requires faculty to maintain an updated curriculum vitae in the Faculty Enhancement and Advancement System (FEAS). Faculty are expected to update their FEAS CV at least once per year. Once updated be sure to "Publish" it. Please generate a "General CV" in FEAS. Export the .rtf file to PDF.


2a. Evidence of Performance (EOP) Worksheet
Attached is the EOP Worksheet that we have filled out in previous years. You may continue to fill this out if you choose.

2b. FEAS Custom CV for Annual Evaluation
To make the EOP less time consuming, I created a custom FEAS CV template for our department, specifically for the Annual Evaluation. It includes all of the same information as requested on the EOP. The attached PDF shows the steps on how to generate this CV. Your FEAS must be up to date for this to be usable.

PT&E Committee Review
Once Malinda and I have reviewed the documents for completeness, we will forward them to the PT&E committee (McCoy, Horsburgh, Peters). Please keep in mind that spouses cannot evaluate each other. Refer to the Department Bylaws, page 8 for information on annual evaluation reviews. The PT&E committee will send their written assessments of faculty to the Chair, no later than March 8, 2024.

Chair Review and meetings with faculty
I will schedule meetings with individual faculty to discuss the evaluation.
Meetings will take place between March 25 and April 2, 2024.

I am required to send all department faculty evaluations to the College by April 5, 2024.

Where did Easy Fix come from?

The Office of Distance Learning (ODL) launched the first Easy Fix campaign in 2021, when FSU was operating primarily online. For many instructors, online teaching was an entirely new experience. Thank you for the heads up, Tanya.

From your email, it seems that only the CV and EOP worksheets are used for the annual evaluations. However, colleagues may not be aware that the Collective Bargain Agreement states that, if they wish, faculty may also submit other materials that must be considered for the teaching evaluation. As quoted below, the Agreement also specifies that in-class visits from 2023 may not be used in the teaching evaluation unless the observer submitted a report to the faculty member within ten days of the observation.

Collective Bargaining Agreement, p. 36:

10.3 Annual Evaluations.
(b) Teaching effectiveness.
(3) The teaching evaluation must take into account any relevant materials submitted by the faculty member. Examples of such materials include class notes, syllabi, student exams and
assignments, supplementary material and peer evaluations of teaching.
(4) Observation/Visitation
b. Upon request, a faculty member is entitled to an evaluation of teaching based on
direct observation or visitation by one or more peers.
c. Whenever a person conducts a classroom visit for the purpose of evaluation, a
report of his/her observations must be submitted to the faculty member within ten (10) working
days of the observation. Otherwise, nothing from the visit may be used in the evaluation process.

We are pleased to invite you to FSU?s three-day Dirac Quantum Discussions that will take place on April 11?13. Please do share this opportunity with any colleagues, faculty, postdocs, and students who may be interested in attending.



This symposium is intended to provide opportunities to learn about various aspects of quantum science and engineering (QSE), explore potential collaborations, and educate junior scientists and novices to this broad interdisciplinary field. We therefore encourage anyone with interest in QSE to consider participating. The Dirac Quantum Discussions will provide opportunities for faculty, postdocs, and students to present their work in the form of short talks and posters.

Per my original email, the required materials are the FEAS CV and the EOP - which can either be on the worksheet provided or the FEAS generated Annual Evaluation CV (instructions in my original email). These must be supplied at a minimum. Supporting documents (as outlined in our bylaws and/or the CBA) are welcome in addition to the CV and EOP.

In terms of class observations, Mark and I discussed, and I conferred with Associate Dean Tim Logan. We agreed that our bylaws and the CBA can be interpreted to the effect that the department decides.

Ever since I have been at FSU the chair has visited all of the faculty's classes at least once a year. I am quite happy to not do that. Faculty can request a visit if they like - and it can be from any other faculty member, it does not have to be me. Without observations/visit, faculty performance in teaching will then be relegated to data in other categories, as specified in the bylaws and CBA. For tenure-track faculty, our bylaws say that the PT&E committee members and the department chair arrange for in-class visitations.



Teaching shall be evaluated by a number of instruments including: student

evaluations (from SPCI or other Evaluation Forms), in-class visitation(s) by members of

the Promotion and Tenure and Evaluation Committee, and department chair, volunteered and solicited

comments from students and former students, evaluations from colleagues who have direct knowledge

of the candidate's teaching, and evaluations of syllabi and other class materials. In addition, the PT&E will evaluate lists of courses taught, graduate student committees served upon, and graduate students

supervised during the relevant period. Mentoring activities will be evaluated including direction of projects resulting in publication by and with students, and placement of students in career positions. Publications of pedagogic books, articles, and receipt of teaching awards will also be taken into account.





The PT&E committee (McCoy, Peters, Horsburgh) will need to decide who goes on the in-class visitations for Drs. Chakrabarti and Shattuck. I will visit both of their classes and anyone else that requests for me to do so.


As Dean Falk pointed out, if any observation is to be used in the annual evaluation, a written report must be made available to the faculty member being observed.

From your email, it seems that only the CV and EOP worksheets are used for the annual evaluations. However, colleagues may not be aware that the Collective Bargain Agreement states that, if they wish, faculty may also submit other materials that must be considered for the teaching evaluation. As quoted below, the Agreement also specifies that in-class visits from 2023 may not be used in the teaching evaluation unless the observer submitted a report to the faculty member within ten days of the observation.

10.3 Annual Evaluations.

(b) Teaching effectiveness.

(3) The teaching evaluation must take into account any relevant materials submitted by the faculty member. Examples of such materials include class notes, syllabi, student exams and

assignments, supplementary material and peer evaluations of teaching.

(4) Observation/Visitation

b. Upon request, a faculty member is entitled to an evaluation of teaching based on

direct observation or visitation by one or more peers.

c. Whenever a person conducts a classroom visit for the purpose of evaluation, a

report of his/her observations must be submitted to the faculty member within ten (10) working

days of the observation. Otherwise, nothing from the visit may be used in the evaluation process.

It is time to begin the annual evaluation process for faculty. Just as in years past, this process includes submitting your evidence of performance over the past calendar year (Spring 2023, Summer 2023, Fall 2023) and your current FEAS CV.



This year you have the option to submit the usual EOP Worksheet (attached) or you can submit a CV customized specifically for the annual evaluation generated in FEAS (instructions attached).

University policy requires faculty to maintain an updated curriculum vitae in the Faculty Enhancement and Advancement System (FEAS). Faculty are expected to update their FEAS CV at least once per year. Once updated be sure to "Publish" it. Please generate a "General CV" in FEAS. Export the .rtf file to PDF.





2a. Evidence of Performance (EOP) Worksheet

Attached is the EOP Worksheet that we have filled out in previous years. You may continue to fill this out if you choose.

2b. FEAS Custom CV for Annual Evaluation

To make the EOP less time consuming, I created a custom FEAS CV template for our department, specifically for the Annual Evaluation. It includes all of the same information as requested on the EOP. The attached PDF shows the steps on how to generate this CV. Your FEAS must be up to date for this to be usable.

PT&E Committee Review

Once Malinda and I have reviewed the documents for completeness, we will forward them to the PT&E committee (McCoy, Horsburgh, Peters). Please keep in mind that spouses cannot evaluate each other. Refer to the Department Bylaws, page 8 for information on annual evaluation reviews. The PT&E committee will send their written assessments of faculty to the Chair, no later than March 8, 2024.



Chair Review and meetings with faculty

I will schedule meetings with individual faculty to discuss the evaluation.

Meetings will take place between March 25 and April 2, 2024.

I am required to send all department faculty evaluations to the College by April 5, 2024.
