From rduarte at fsu.edu Wed Jul 3 13:11:02 2024 From: rduarte at fsu.edu (Rob Duarte) Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2024 17:11:02 +0000 Subject: [Art-mfastudio] CAB news! Message-ID: Hi all, I hope you are having a great summer. I wanted to email to let you know about some exciting changes at CAB. First, there is going to be a new lab that is focused on fibers/textiles. There has always been consistent interest in working with these materials throughout the department (including the soft sculpture course and the successful fibers course taught this summer and this coming fall), so it will be great to have a clean space that can be dedicated to exploring these kinds of materials. Equipment will include a variety of floor looms, sewing machines, a cutting/yardage table, rug tufting frame, etc. The lab will be accessible to all art students at CAB (and sometimes BAs that are enrolled in fibers-related classes). The location of the fibers lab will be where the MFA computer lab is currently, so there are computer lab changes as well. The two computer labs will be consolidated into one room that will have enough computers and a projector, so things like student-led workshops, etc. will be possible as well. Luckily all of the computers are the most up-to-date in the department because of a recent grant to upgrade them. The room itself will also be getting a bit of a refresh. Some photo equipment will probably be accessible in this room as well - scanners, light tables, etc. The other main benefit is that all of the computers will be in one place, with swipe access - something that was a big security hole with the current MFA computer lab. All art students at CAB will have swipe access. Finally, in an effort to (1) have less food/refrigerators scattered around building and (2) to have more opportunities for creating community with everyone out at CAB, the current MFA lounge will be open to any art student working at CAB. While it has been nice to have an MFA-only lounge, having more opportunities to eat/meet/chat together will be great. This is something that has never been possible at CAB. If reserving the room for LGA meetings, etc. is something that's needed, we can figure that out. That's the update. I really expect these changes to add better security, new studio opportunities, more of a CAB community, and better use of spaces that have been underutilized for a long time. As always, please email me and Tenee if you have any questions or feedback. (If you do use the anonymous feedback, realize that we'll read your message but won't be able to respond.)
