Hello!

I hope this email finds you well as we approach the start of the fall semester.

I want to let you know that we plan to hold the annual Fall Teaching Orientation on Tuesday, August 22nd from 8:45 am - 12:30 pm. We will provide some bagels, fruit, other refreshments, and coffee in the morning. Please note that we will not be providing lunch since we plan to end early. This orientation contains training that is required by the University for all instructors who will be teaching any class in 2023-2024 academic year. All GTAs must attend this orientation every year in order to keep their teaching award.

Please be sure to reserve this date and time for this required training. We will also provide some information on several new initiatives, departmental and legislative updates.

As a reminder this orientation was originally designed for those teaching in Foundations but has since grown to include others since we cover information required for all instructors. To minimize the time and extraneous information, much of the Foundations-specific information will be included in a teaching handbook that I spent the summer creating.  For anyone teaching in another area, there is a lot of good information in the handbook that is applicable to any class, but some of it is Foundations specific. I?m happy to share it with all.

Even though much of it will be in the handbook, there are some Foundations initiatives that I do want to spend a little time on:

  *   Non-majors in our classes
  *   Our new reading initiative. This fall it is an excerpt from Time Travel: A History, by James Gleick
  *   Art into Words (new initiative)
  *   Research Dossiers that will accompany student submissions for major projects
  *   & briefly, the handbook

The basic agenda is attached.

Hi All,

I try not to email over the weekend, but I just want to be sure you are all keeping an eye on this. It is still too soon to be sure, but the cone of Tropical Depression 10 (projected Hurricane Idalia) has tightened and remains focused on the Panhandle. If that forecast holds it will likely mean campus closures, so be prepared to lose a day of class next week.

Again, there is no need to panic but I do suggest planning ahead. If the storm strengthens in the Gulf as is currently projected, and if it hits straight on or to our west, be prepared for an uncomfortable period of possible long power outages.

At this stage the NHC updates hurricane track forecasts every six hours, so there should be more info at 10AM. ???      https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at5.shtml?start#contents

For those who are new to the area, here's some potentially helpful advice - (adapted from an email Jean Hudson sent out to Art History):

Keep your gas tank full. I would go ahead and fill up now, because the first thing Tallahassee does, when there is ANY possibility of a storm, is form gas lines and deplete the supply. That can be a real problem even if a storm doesn?t come here.

Keep medicines refilled and essentials stocked up during hurricane season (pretty much all fall):  pet food, toilet paper, emergency cash. Be sure you have at least one good working flashlight and fresh batteries for it, and a car charger for your phone. If you have backup chargers, keep them charged.

Have a stock of non-perishable food, in case of power outages. A tropical storm in 2016 left most of Tallahassee without power for several days (some for 2 weeks) due to trees falling on power lines. Don?t make any assumptions based on the strength of a storm. There?s no need to panic, but being prepared can keep you from being uncomfortable.

Get information from reliable sources. Social media will tell you there?s a Cat 6 hurricane on the way (no such thing) and news channels can be alarmist. The primary source for all storm prediction is nhc.noaa.gov<http://nhc.noaa.gov/>; the app Hurricane Tracker<https://apps.apple.com/us/app/national-hurricane-center-data/id1289108781> pulls data directly from the NHC. And the European Model has recently proven to be more accurate than others.

Due to Tropical Storm Idalia and its possible impact on the region, Florida State University?s Tallahassee campus will close and cancel classes on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023.

Essential business operations will continue. Deans and Vice Presidents will provide guidance for their respective colleges and divisions. Employees designated by their department as essential personnel should consult with their supervisors.

Main campus housing and dining operations will continue throughout the closure. Additional details on student services and programming will be shared Tuesday morning. The university expects to resume classes and normal business operations on Thursday, Aug. 31.

University officials continue to closely monitor the developments of this severe weather event and remind individuals not to travel into areas with deteriorating weather conditions.

Florida State University Schools (FSUS), Florida State University?s K-12 Charter School, will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art
The Ringling campus in Sarasota will be closed to visitors through Wednesday, Aug. 30. The campus will be closed to non-essential staff from noon on Tuesday, August 29 to noon on Wednesday, August 30. Main campus housing will remain open and dining operations will be adjusted accordingly throughout the closure. Additional details on student services and programming are forthcoming. The university expects to resume classes and normal business operations on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Human Resources will send a communication with timekeeping instructions to document the closure during the accelerated payroll cycle. Faculty and instructors will receive guidance on first-day attendance and other procedures in a separate email.

University officials continue to closely monitor the developments of this severe weather event and remind individuals not to travel into the path of the storm.
Florida State University Schools (FSUS), Florida State University?s K-12 Charter School, will remain fully operational as scheduled on Tuesday, Aug. 29, and will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 30. FSUS students and families will need to make accommodations to be off campus by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, to accommodate for emergency operations.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art
The Ringling campus in Sarasota will be closed to visitors through Wednesday, Aug. 30. The campus will be closed to non-essential staff from 12 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, to 12 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30. University officials will determine the appropriate day and time to reopen the campus.

FSU College of Medicine Regional Medical Campus in Sarasota, Florida
The College of Medicine Regional Medical Campus in Sarasota will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29, and Wednesday, Aug. 30. University officials will determine the appropriate day and time to reopen the campus and updates will be posted here. Students should contact their community faculty to determine whether they will take part in their clinical rotations.

FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training
The FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training in Sarasota will cancel classes beginning at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, through Wednesday, Aug. 30.

FSU Panama City
The FSU Panama City (FL) campus will remain open and fully operational, and classes will meet as scheduled.
