Alumni Residency opportunities are open to national and international artists who have participated in Bemis Center’s Residency Program or have exhibited at Bemis after a two-year hiatus from the program. Artists who participated in the Bemis Residency Program or exhibited at Bemis prior to August 2020 are eligible to apply for a 2023 residency. U.S.-based artists-in-residence receive a $250 USD weekly stipend, a $750 USD travel stipend, and an additional $2,500 USD unrestricted materials stipend. Located in the historic Old Market, Omaha's arts and culture district, Bemis Center's campus accommodates a broad range of artistic activity. Selected residents enjoy generous-sized, private live/work studios complete with a kitchen and bathroom; 24-hour access to extensive installation and production spaces and the Okada Sculpture & Ceramics Facility, a 9,000 square foot industrial space used for large-scale sculpture fabrication; and a Sound Studio for rehearsing and recording. Bemis offers residents unmatched technical guidance, access to interns and an established network of resources. Participants have the opportunity to create networks, collaborate and share their work with fellow residents, organizational partners, and the public. The Bemis Alumni Program extends artist support beyond their Bemis residency through Alumni Residencies, the annual Ree Kaneko Award and Alumni Convenings. Partnerships with local organizations such as The Union for Contemporary Art, Hot Shops and Metro Community College Prototype Design Lab offer Bemis artists-in-residence access to additional technical support and opportunities to create networks and collaborations. Residents participate in Bemis Center’s Open House / Open Studios public program where they open their studios to provide attendees a glimpse into their process, present works-in-progress and deliver a short presentation.
