I hope that this message finds everyone doing well and having had a lovely weekend. I just wanted to take a moment to share an opportunity for graduate students sent to me by Julia Galloway (Professor & Graduate Advisor at University of Montana). Here is the call: 7th Annual MFA Online Exhibition The 7th annual MFA online exhibition is an international online exhibition, for graduate students, juried by graduate students from the University of Montana and Montana State University. All art forms are accepted! Deadline to submit work is Sunday, October 24th. Link to prospectus: http://mfaexhibitiononline.org There is no entry fee and there are nine modest cash awards. It is an opportunity to see what work is being made by MFA students and network for the future. ?COHORTS ? alonetogether? is an online exhibition epitomizing the brave work of graduate students. As graduate students we are experiencing a unique time in our lives; it is a time of transition, inquiry, artistic growth, intense creation and struggle. It is in this period we are surrounded and nurtured by faculty and peers. But in today?s world that community can be distant and make us often feel alone. This exhibit represents the excellent work being produced by graduate students today and reflects our shared experiences through these crazy times.? Please email Julia Galloway with any questions or concerns you may have. Here is her contact information below: Julia Galloway Professor, Graduate Advisor (she/her) School of Visual & Media Art - University of Montana julia.galloway at umontana.edu www.umt.edu/art c. 585 368 8096 www.juliagalloway.com http://endangered-species-project.org Founder, Field Guide for Ceramic Artisans http://ceramicsfieldguide.org Hoping that everyone will take advantage of this opportunity. Cachia's curated over 40 exhibitions across North America, Europe, and Australia, and her expertise in the field is evidenced by her prolific lists of publications and the number of museums around the world who've brought her in to consult regarding the making of their spaces and content more promoting of disabled artists and accessible to disabled audiences. Should be an awesome talk! It's via zoom, and you'll have to register in advance via the QR code in the attached flier. Again, next Tuesday, Oct. 12th @ 1:00 pm. If you are on the fence or can't make it and are interested in learning more about her work, she's got an amazing website as well: https://amandacachia.com/ All Best, and if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out! This does not come from FSU. * To review the City of New Orleans requirements, please go to: https://ready.nola.gov/incident/coronavirus/safe-reopening/ * We will not ask to see proof of testing or vaccination. However, before departure on 12/6, we will ask you, ?Can you meet the New Orleans? requirements of proof of vaccination or negative PCR test in order to gain entry into exhibitions and other venues??. * In other words: * Everyone will be EXPECTED to take a Covid-19 test to make sure they are negative prior to departure. * And everyone will also be EXPECTED to not go if they find out they are positive as that would put everyone else at risk. * We (FSU) will not require you to wear masks but we do expect you to wear them in the van and, later, in accordance with the City of New Orleans? requirements. * Lastly, this trip is optional. If any of this leads to a change of mind regarding your participation, please fill out the survey a second time to indicate your changes. The link to the survey is https://forms.gle/B7mc8ipxgFTRjLrz8 * note: the survey is nearly the same as the previous version except I have clarified that proof of vaccination and/or testing, and the mask mandate are City of New Orleans requirements ? not ours. And the wording for one question has been changed: * "Indicate below that you understand that ALL participants will need to get a PCR test within 72 hours of departure, and masks will be required in the vans?? changed to: * "Indicate below that you understand that ALL participants are expected to get a PCR test within 72 hours of departure, and masks will be expected in the vans?" I appreciate the opportunity to give more thorough information to all of you and I hope it resolves any concerns. As always, please reach out to me if there are additional issues. Hurricane Ida Mutual Aid As many of you are aware, on August 30th, Hurricane Ida made landfall in New Orleans, exactly 16 years to the day that Hurricane Katrina devastated our region. While much of the initial disaster response is complete, New Orleans and the surrounding River Parishes have a long process of recovery and rebuilding ahead. Prospect.5 will contribute to various efforts in this next phase, and the first is amplification of the work of those on the ground. Please take note and consider supporting or learning more about the tremendous mutual aid efforts in our state, listed below: Eternal Seeds Emergency Fund for Artists and Culture Bearers Eternal Seeds is a community-based nonprofit that serves Black artists in New Orleans. Their works centers around education, empowerment, and the preservation of New Orleans Black history and culture, with a focus on young and emerging artists. Eternal Seeds is distributing micro-grants to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or person of color) artists ages 18+ based in New Orleans and surrounding areas who were impacted by Hurricane Ida. United Houma Nation The United Houma Nation (UHN) is a state recognized tribe of approximately 17,000 tribal members residing within a six-parish (county) service area; Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, St. Mary, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes are located along the southeastern coast of Louisiana. UNH is in need of volunteers and funds to support their direct aid efforts in the six parish communities, ranging from support with FEMA Disaster Assistance Claims, to roof tarping, cleanup crews, and supply distribution. Bvlbancha Collective Bvlbancha Collective is an Indigenous mutual aid collective in Bulbancha (the original Chahta name for New Orleans) that collectively practices traditional ceremonies, wildcrafting, herbalism, jewelry and regalia making. In response to Hurricane Ida, Bvlbancha Collective has been organizing herbal medicine & NADA treatment pop-ups with @solitarygardens, supply distribution with @anothergulf.ispossilbe, as well as outdoor dishwashing stations, ice runs, roof tarping, and elder & family care. Point-au-Chien Ida Relief Point-au-Chien are indigenous peoples of the Terrebonne Basin, the fastest eroding area in the United States and they are at a crossroads of unprecedented change to the natural environment and adaptation to maintain their unique tribal cultural heritage. They have organized community events to provide meals, access to laptops and legal information, supply distribution, and activities for youth and families. Another Gulf Is Possible Another Gulf Is Possible uses the transformative nature of art and media to inspire and catalyze social change. They work collaboratively to uplift and revitalize practices conducive to a just society that benefits all, not just the privileged few in the Global South. Another Gulf established the Just Ida Recovery Frontline Resource Mobilization Page to provide mutual aid, resources, and information following the wake of Hurricane Ida. House of Tulip House of Tulip is a nonprofit collective creating housing solutions for TGNC people in Louisiana. In response to Hurricane Ida, House of Tulip raised and distributed more than $90,000 of direct aid to TGNC (Trans and Gender Noncoforming) community members in Louisiana, and has hundreds of unmet applications to date. Arts Council New Orleans GoFundMe To support artists during these unprecedented crises, the Arts Council established a GoFundMe to provide financial relief to artists and culture bearers based in Orleans, Jefferson, and Plaquemines Parishes. The Arts Council is collaborating with arts community partners to assist in the selection and distribution of the grants. glbl wrmng glbl wrmng is a collective of New Orleans native and/or based creatives that produce collaborative projects, music recordings, and workshops to foster a spirit of collaboration and unity amongst the young hip hop, visual artist, and music business community. Their work is an effort to catalyze artist development, music business incubation, and education in areas such as artist sustainability, licensing, and publishing. In response to Hurricane Ida, glbl wrmng has provided financial aid to New Orleans based POC artists and creatives displaced by Hurricane Ida and have 50+ artists still on their waiting list. Imagine Water Works Since 2012 Imagine Water Works has helped lead the changes we?ve seen in New Orleans in how we think about living with water, working in an intersection of reducing risk from flooding, pollution, and natural hazards. In response to Hurricane Ida, Imagine Water Works has mobilized a relief fund for LA residents, organized community power stations and supply distribution sites, amplified FEMA Disaster Assistance information, and continues to coordinate hot plate meals across New Orleans. Southern Solidarity (SoSo) Southern Solidarity is a grassroots, community-based group of volunteers in solidarity with the unhoused in their quest toward liberation. Year round they organize the delivery of food, medical resources and basic needs directly to the unhoused in the downtown area of New Orleans. They are influenced by anti-imperialist principles and mobilized by a black queer woman. Throughout Hurricane Ida recovery, Southern Solidarity has been active on the ground distributing daily to both unhoused folks in New Orleans and displaced folks in the river parishes, prioritizing the needs of indigenous people. I have created an agenda regarding all the points to be presented to the faculty tomorrow morning. I have listed it below without going into too much detail on some of the issues and have left it anonymous. Once the meeting is over, I will email you all a brief of the meeting. In order from most requested: 1. LGBTQ+ Ally Training for the faculty: ?So we are all using the same language? ?No art faculty are listed as safe zones. I would love to see more faculty on this map along with signage posted on their offices.? ?I think it is also important to note that, I believe there are individuals among the faculty who are actively in need of this resource and a guide on how to discuss these things, who will not seek it out or participate without being required. However, the burden of educating the facilitators on their experiences should not rest solely on the shoulders of the marginalized students.? 2. Visiting Artists: ?I was curious about the possibility of suggesting artists by cohorts this year. Is there still this option or not?? ?Can you ask about the visiting artists this semester and if we?ll get studio visits from outside artists?? 3. Disability Sensitivity Training: ?I felt that a few of the events have severely favored the physically able (the come help and paint and you get first dibs on the spaces, the walking tour, etc). There was not something offered that would not have been too physically demanding so I did not participate at all. I have also been asked several times about my "not being around" and find it deeply insulting to have people basically insinuate that I am not correctly prioritizing my artwork.? 4. Stolen Property at CAB: ?So far, we?ve learned that if something is stolen, nothing happens. How can faculty help us foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and solidarity with our fellow artists in the MFA and BFA programs? Maybe we need to have a social or something so everyone knows each other and would be less likely to get sticky fingers. I would like to know what the faculty suggests to help in this matter and what they can do to support.? 5. Dirty Bathrooms at CAB: ?It's been more than a month that the floors and other parts have remained dirty. I know that there are a couple of people who clean the building, but they don't do much and pour just powder in them.? LGBTQIA+ Allyship Training: The faculty thought this was a great idea and it made sense that we should all be on the same page concerning inclusion. They are noting to add it to the requirements for staff orientation and looking further into how to meet expectations now. Some have taken the training, but many haven't. Lillian is taking the lead on this. Daniel supported the idea and added he was not asked to take training upon employment at FSU to validate the concern. Iris shared their personal experience of the workshop with the faculty. 2. Visiting Artists: In short, yes, we will have visiting artists. Carolyn will be sending detailed information soon, it is something already being worked through, and 3rd Years will have priority in the Fall semester. 3. Disability Sensitivity Training: The faculty was happy to have this highlighted and will investigate more ways to promote inclusion as hearing this means they haven't done enough to address this issue of inclusion. A specific member of the faculty (being vague to keep anonymity for the student who requested) responded by apologizing for the situation and hopes that the student understands they were asking out of concern. Additional interpersonal concerns within the MFAs should be handled within the MFAs. 4. Stolen property: Lillian was a little upset to hear that someone thinks nothing is being done as she has gone to great lengths to find stolen property to the best of her ability and make the spaces safer. Rather than getting disturbingly authoritarian within the institution, Lillian suggested asking Carolyn for a locker/locked cabinet if you do not have one and to make sure you keep your stuff safe. If you do have something stolen you will need dates and you will need to report asap. Opportunities for socials and other bonding activities are completely up to the MFAs and BFAs for which we could complete at any time. 5. Dirty bathrooms: Lillian understands but also asks for patience with the custodial staff as they are also short on people. There have also been suggestions to keep art supplies out of the bathrooms which makes the custodian's jobs more difficult. Holly has added that their income is very low and solidarity with them is advisable. 6. ROOF: The roof is in process of being replaced and should be finished by the end of November. They can't do it unless it doesn't rain for a whole month, otherwise, it would be sooner. The materials by the parking lot are for the roof replacement. Nick Parparian and crew are short-staffed so they are doing their best to get this fixed as soon as possible. I have attached the list and I have put the ones who are confirmed on the FSU Art Grad calendar. This fall 3rd year grads will get preference and, in the spring, 2nd and 1st year grads will get preference. If slots are available, we?ll open them up. The 3rd years have until 10/15 to share with me their order of preference for studio visits. Daniel and I will figure it out from there. As a point of clarification, the rationale is that this fall is a great time for 3rd year grads to be getting lots of feedback. Whereas, in the spring, they will be head long into your paper and exhibition preparations when multiple voices in the studio might be distracting. The 1st year grads are generally not ready with enough new work for studio visits in the fall and they and the second years can get most benefit in the spring. No process is perfect. We hope this is satisfactory for this year. Feedback is welcome.
