Remember to apply for the Department of Art Student Awards ? You can?t win it if you?re not in it! These awards recognize the strength of our students and that means YOU! The Department of Art provides awards to Studio Art students whose work demonstrates exceptional achievement. Awards range from $250 to $1000. We are typically able to provide 30+ awards ? so with a strong application, you have a great chance of being selected! All awards are applied to your Financial Aid package. If you have questions about how the award would be applied in your specific case, please contact Financial Aid directly. To apply, go to https://fsu.academicworks.com/ After login, fill out the General Application first, and then select College of Fine Arts/Dept of Art Application and complete the art portion as outlined below. Both parts of the application must be completed to be considered for an award. Application deadline Monday, Jan 25 at 11:59 pm Preparing your Art Award application ? make it great! Here?s how: 1. Develop a concise yet compelling artist?s statement between 150 and 300 words in length. Start with a brief biographical statement, followed by a description of the ideas that drive your work. SPECIAL NOTE for Undergraduates: If you wish to be considered for an Ann Kirn Scholarship (a $1000 award limited to undergraduate students), you must include a thoughtful description of the role that design plays in your studio practice. 2. Select the five (5) to eight (8) images that best represent your studio work. Formatting your images: Be sure that your images are photographed well and cropped as needed. File sizes should be less than 2MB and either jpg or png. A video will be considered as one image. Submit your video to Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link within your application. Still images should be in a square format: To get your images into a square format, open the image in Photoshop. Go to Image/Image Size and size the image to 1080 pixels on the longest edge at 72dpi. Then, go to Image/Canvas Size, and make the width and height 1080 pixels x 1080 pixels and choose the canvas extension color as black or white (or choose a color). Keep the anchor dot in the center. Choosing your images: A balance between breadth and depth is ideal. If no two images are related in any way, your submission can appear unfocused. If all of the images are extremely similar, you can come across as short on imagination. Most importantly, be sure all of the images presented are your very best. It is better to submit six great images than to submit six great ones and two weak ones. Media awards: Each Focus Area has a $250 award (Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Digital Media, Photography). You will have the option of selecting one or more areas that best describes your focus, but your images must reflect that. For example, if you want to be considered for the Painting Award, you must submit one or more images of your best work in Painting. 3. Write a brief description of each image and provide the title, size, medium, and date completed. This is a great opportunity to build on the general comments from your Artist?s Statement through specific information about each image. SPECIAL NOTE: The application as a whole may evolve over several days and is likely to take many hours to complete. Putting the necessary time and thought into it will greatly improve your chances of success. Furthermore, once you have laid the groundwork with this application, you will be better prepared for future applications for awards on or off campus. As Preston mentioned in your meeting last week, MoFA has partnered with the Departments of Art and Art History to offer an exciting program of guest speakers this spring, including Earlonne Woods and Nigel Poor from Ear Hustle, Hank Willis Thomas, and Wendy Red Star. It is our hope that faculty members from across the college will direct students to these events and consider incorporating these speakers into course content. We have created the attached PDF to help faculty share resources with students. For each speaker, we selected a few links to articles, videos, and websites that serve as a good introduction to the speaker and their work. All three of the events will cover topics that are relevant to students across our college and our communities. Museum staff is available to meet with faculty, students, and classes in support of these programs. If you or your colleagues have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Preston, or Annie Booth. A big thank you to Art and Art History, and particularly Jessica Ingram, for helping to make these events possible. Message-ID: Good morning everyone, As noted in the below email, you are ALL required to complete the mandatory "Kognito" training, by Tomorrow, Friday, January 22nd. If you're not sure if you have completed it yet, simply log in using the below instructions and it will show if you've completed the training. In brief... Instructions * Visit the Kognito webpage on the FSU University Counseling Center's website. * Sign in with your FSU account credentials. * Launch Kognito's At-Risk for Faculty and Staff mental health awareness training. * Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the training simulations. * Receive your Certificate of Completion at the end of the training. This message to all employees has been approved by Dr. Sally McRorie, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Renisha Gibbs, Associate Vice President for Human Resources and Finance & Administration Chief of Staff. As previously communicated, the Florida Board of Governors (BOG) has contracted with Kognito and implemented their At-Risk for Faculty and Staff online training. This simulation-based training gives us all a better understanding of how to identify students who need additional support and direct them to help. As an FSU employee, you may be the first one to notice signs of distress in a student. It is important that you are prepared to respond to such concerns. The training should take approximately 45 minutes to complete, depending on your level of engagement, and is considered work time. The BOG requires this training for all state university employees (faculty and staff) and has now clarified that the requirement does apply to OPS employees including: * Adjunct Faculty * Graduate Assistants * Resident Assistants * Temporary OPS (non-student) OPS employees exempt from this training include: * Short-term OPS student appointments * Federal Work Study * OPS employees working fewer than three months This training MUST be completed by January 22, 2021, in advance of the BOG required reports on completion. All Universities are expected to have a 100% completion rate. Instructions for completing the training are listed below. We thank you in advance for your compliance with this important BOG requirement. Training completions will be transferred daily from the Kognito system into OMNI. OMNI HR query FSU_HR_TRN_BOG_KOGNITO is available to assist departments with monitoring department completions. If you have technical questions about the training, please contact University Counseling Center Kognito liaison, Jaymee Spannring, at jspannring at fsu.edu. When Stephanie James asked me to take on this position, I was happy to do what I could to move the program forward while creating an atmosphere of consistency, communication, and respect. Any headway I've made in these areas is due to all of you and the never-ending work and dedication of Tenee' Hart. As many of you know, I am not a tenured or tenure-seeking faculty member, and as such, my holding this position stretched our department's by-laws. Due to our current efforts to update and solidify departmental by-laws for consistency and clarity, I have been asked to step down as MFA Director, effective this fall. The past two years have been a fantastic experience, and I am a better person, having worked with and for each of you. I am also beyond appreciative of your focus, patience, and flexibility as we moved through difficult times. Moving forward, in the fall, Professor Carolyn Henne will step into the position of MFA Director, and I have no hesitation in saying that she will bring a wealth of insight, foresight, experience, skill, and approachability to the program. Carolyn previously served as the Chair of our Department, and we are fortunate that she has agreed to be the next MFA Director. You're not rid of me, though, as I will now step into the role of Area Head of Sculpture and look forward to working with many (if not all) of you, and will bring the same energy, passion, and openness to that position. We've all been through difficult times this past year, and I'm excited for what lies ahead. Thank you all, and I'll see you soon! As of the deadline, only SEVEN out of Twenty-Eight of you replied. The efforts being made on the part of Daniel Luedtke and Meredith Lynn, as well as Alex Adkinson, are in response to the current pandemic situation and a reflection of your wishes to have more exposure, given that we have not been able to travel. I trust that the low number of people responding with interest is due to miscommunication, as it is a sad reflection on the program and not who I know you to be. To be clear - this is not a popularity contest. An artist's decision to spend time with you is an indication that they are interested in what you're doing or think that they may be able to push you further.
