Hey grad students!
I hope your weekend is going well.
Attached are excerpts from a book Sharon Louden edited called Living and Sustaining a Creative Life. She asked artists to consider how they balance their creative practice with the practical considerations that often impact the time and resources we can dedicate to our work. I selected a few of the essays for you and also Sharon’s intro and conclusion. Please let me know if you’d like more.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday at noon!
Best,
Meredith

Subject: Lunch with Sharon Louden, September 25
Good afternoon, graduate students!
The museum is hosting a talk with Sharon Louden on September 24th, and as part of her “visit” we’ve requested that she spend some time with you on Friday, September 25. Sharon is an artist, writer, and arts administrator who wears many, many hats (including Artistic Director of the Chautauqua Institute, including the residency program) and has served as a mentor for Creative Capital and the Andy Warhol Foundation. She is the editor of the Living and Sustaining a Creative Life book series and writes and thinks about the art world a lot (including in this article<https://hyperallergic.com/490654/why-art-colleges-and-universities-should-not-act-like-for-profit-galleries/> for Hyperallergic about MFA programs and commercial galleries).
Sharon will host a lunch, just for you, on Friday, September 25 at noon on zoom. This is an opportunity for you to ask about building a career – applying for opportunities, introducing yourself to curators, setting up a studio, getting your writing published, anything you’re curious about. I’ve had the great pleasure of getting to know Sharon over the past couple years, and she’s incredible. Her energy, intelligence, and generosity are legendary. She knows everyone and is dedicated to helping people meet each other and get things done.
I’ll send out the zoom link next week, and in the meantime, if you have any questions or would like scans of some of the essays in her book, please let me know.
Best,
Meredith
