Any theft is disturbing on many levels, and an investigation has begun to retrieve said item. We are currently gathering records of everyone who swiped into the building, as well as video surveillance footage. If you know anything about this incident, please reach out to me with assured anonymity. If you are the perpetrator of this theft, I am extending a one-time offer for you to return the camera lens. I will leave a box outside my office door (Room 1406, next to the ?fishbowl? in CAB) for you to leave the lens; if returned by 12:00pm on Friday, November 13th, no further action will be taken, and we will all move on. If it is not returned by Friday before noon, this matter, all swipe card access data, and surveillance footage will be turned over to the FSU Police, and they will pursue it from there, with obviously much harsher consequences. Message-ID: Open Now: Art Student Awards Application Dear Students, The FSU Department of Art announces the annual Art Student Awards. These awards recognize the strength of our students and that means YOU! The Department of Art gives a number of awards to Studio Art students whose work demonstrates exceptional achievement. Awards range from $250 to $1000. We are typically able to provide 30+ awards ? so with a strong application, you have a great chance of being selected! All awards are applied to your Financial Aid package. If you have questions about how the award would be applied in your specific case, please contact Financial Aid directly. To apply, go to https://fsu.academicworks.com/ After login, fill out the General Application first, and then select College of Fine Arts/Dept of Art Application and complete the art portion as outlined below. Both parts of the application must be completed to be considered for an award. Application deadline Monday, January 25 at 11:59 pm Preparing your Art Award application ? make it great! Here?s how: 1. Develop a concise yet compelling artist?s statement between 150 and 300 words in length. Start with a brief biographical statement, followed by a description of the ideas that drive your work. SPECIAL NOTE for Undergraduates: If you wish to be considered for an Ann Kirn Scholarship (a $1000 award limited to undergraduate students), you must include a thoughtful description of the role that design plays in your studio practice. 2. Select the five (5) to eight (8) images that best represent your studio work. Formatting your images: Be sure that your images are photographed well and cropped as needed. File sizes should be less than 2MB and either jpg or png. A video will be considered as one image. Submit your video to Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link within your application. Still images should be in a square format: To get your images into a square format, open the image in Photoshop. Go to Image/Image Size and size the image to 1080 pixels on the longest edge at 72dpi. Then, go to Image/Canvas Size, and make the width and height 1080 pixels x 1080 pixels and choose the canvas extension color as black or white (or choose a color). Keep the anchor dot in the center. Choosing your images: A balance between breadth and depth is ideal. If no two images are related in any way, your submission can appear unfocused. If all of the images are extremely similar, you can come across as short on imagination. Most importantly, be sure all of the images presented are your very best. It is better to submit six great images than to submit six great ones and two weak ones. Media awards: Each of the focus areas has a $250 award (Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Digital Media, Photography). You will have the option of selecting one or more areas that best describes your focus, but your images must reflect that. For example, if you want to be considered for the Painting Award, you must submit one or more images of your best work in painting. 3. Write a brief description of each image and provide the title, size, medium, and date completed. This is a great opportunity to build on the general comments from your Artist?s Statement through specific information about each image. SPECIAL NOTE: The application as a whole may evolve over several days and is likely to take many hours to complete. Putting the necessary time and thought into it will greatly improve your chances of success. Furthermore, once you have laid the groundwork with this application, you will be better prepared for future applications for awards on or off campus. Sample application and tips for writing your artist statement are posted on the department website: https://art.fsu.edu/opportunities/scholarships-grants/department-of-art-student-awards/ Questions? If you are planning to take the class, Teaching College Art, next semester, I strongly encourage you to register for this December training session. The training is entirely remote and registration for it is now open. Information about how to register is in the email copied below. PIE stands for Program for Instructional Excellence and you MUST be PIE certified before you can teach at FSU. Taking this training now will accomplish several positive things: First, it jumpstarts the learning that we must do to be prepared. Teaching is a nuanced and complicated thing and there are many moving parts. PIE will help shape your understanding of many of the aspects of teaching and better prepare you for the discussions, observations, and work we will do in class next semester. Next, because this training is a university requirement, you will not be allowed to teach until you have successfully completed the training. By taking the training in December, you will have another opportunity to take it before teaching should you need it. IF instead, you decide to wait until August to do this training and you are scheduled to teach a class for us you run the risk of being pulled from the class IF you do not pass your PIE training. That last minute schedule change is difficult on every one and not worth the added stress for you either. Best to sign up for this session: ?> Attendees should self-register here (for both the Canvas & Zoom training): https://bit.ly/SP21-PIE-TEACHING-TRAINING Last, as our graduate student body numbers have increased and the number of teaching opportunities offered in the department has held steady or decreased, the opportunity to teach will be quite competitive. Teaching opportunities will go to those who show the most promise both in class and in their studio practice. Please reach out to me if I can answer any questions of be of help to you. I hope that you will all have a pleasant and safe holiday break. More info below. Best regards, Anne ______________ Anne Stagg Assistant Professor | Department of Art College of Fine Arts | Florida State University This message is being sent to all Deans, Department Chairs, and Graduate Program Directors: Please distribute as needed. Happy Monday! Just a reminder that registration is open for the annual Spring 2021 Program for Instructional Excellence (PIE) Teaching Conference/TA Orientation! The event this year will be held in December and fully online due to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns. A portion of the training will be delivered asynchronously via Canvas (due 12/13), and there will also be several synchronous Zoom training sessions on Wednesday, December 16th and Thursday, December 17th 2020 (see times & attendee self-registration link below). This conference includes sessions that provide graduate students with teaching policy training requirements as stated in the current University-wide TA Standards along with best practices in grading, communicating with students, encouraging active learning techniques, diversity and inclusion in the classroom, and technology usage. By the end of this training, participants will be able to explain and have procedures in place to address University policy issues related to the Academic Honor Policy, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Discrimination-Sexual Harassment-Retaliation. Participants will also be equipped with strategies to help navigate use of Canvas features essential to their role as a TA, communicate effectively with students, and provide productive, inclusive and equitable student feedback. Who should attend? * New graduate student TAs ? graduate students CANNOT hold TA positions UNLESS first satisfying the University-wide TA Standards, so be sure to review these carefully! ? New graduate students who do not yet hold a TA assignment, but will likely do so in the future (including this coming spring and summer 2021 -- PIE does NOT offer a TA Conference in the summer semester, so please plan ahead). * Returning graduate students who have never attended PIE or a departmental equivalent, but who may teach in the future are also encouraged to attend * Post Docs * Faculty and staff are also welcome! Where: Online (both asynchronously via Canvas, and synchronously via Zoom) When: 1.
