Hello all!


I'm writing to let you know that the Art Education Department will be offering a graduate level arts based research course in Fall of 2020.



Course Description:


"Doing some arts based research implies a fundamental shift away from the conventional assumption that all research is meant to bring us closer to a final understanding of various dimensions of the social world. It means abandoning the notion that the research process-whether through the social sciences or otherwise-should always result in a more persuasive argument or interpretation of how social and cultural phenomena are best perceived or conceptualized” (Barone & Eisner, 2012, p.14)

This graduate level course is suited for students from a range of disciplinary interests, these include, but are not limited to anthropology, fine art, art education, art therapy, museum education, cultural studies, dance, education, social work, sociology, psychology, theatre, and gender studies. As such, the purpose of this class is to open up an understanding of alternate possibilities for doing social research. Specifically, through the development of a variety of approaches that are both sensitive to and incorporate the arts. Arts based research is not limited to producing works of art in response to research, rather, it includes the incorporation of artful ways of making, thinking, being and doing in any and all stages of the research process.


The goal of this course is to provide students with a foundational understanding of the various approaches to arts based research, explore a range of artistic expressions, engage in artistically informed inquiry, and read, critique and discuss works of arts based research from a range of fields.
