I was under the misunderstanding that she would be reaching out to you directly. It's always been my focus to be as upfront and transparent as possible and I feel as though I've let you down. With that being said, yes, Stephanie has decided to step down as Chair and will remain on as faculty for at least the next year. This was entirely her decision - she and Tom will be returning to the U.K. where she will teach remotely. Academia is a strange landscape and people move in and out of teaching and administrative jobs just as they do in any profession. Moving forward, Faculty is in the process of voting on a new chair to be selected from our tenured faculty - this position will then be a three or four-year rotation amongst faculty, which is the way it is done at most universities and provides a much clearer path forward with greater consistency and communication. Again, I apologize if this news made it to you via any "grapevine" (I strongly dislike grapevine-based communication), and I hope this finds you well. 2020 is proving to be a challenging year for many reasons, please know that I am here (there) for all of you and, if not through a socially-distanced meeting, my virtual door is always open. I miss seeing your faces and look forward to a time when we can all be together again.
