Hart Florida State University | College of Fine Arts Department of Art Graduate Advisor MFA Studio Manager | Adjunct Professor tahart at fsu.edu | 540.220.5629 ?????????????????????? [Grad School_Top_BW] The Florida State University Graduate School requests nominations for the Graduate Student Research and Creativity Awards Program. This awards program is designed to recognize the superior scholarship of FSU graduate students. Nomination materials (with endorsement letters) are due in the FSU Dropbox no later than 5:00 P.M., Friday, January 31, 2020. Award FSU graduate students will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to research and creative endeavors at the Celebration of Graduate Student Excellence held each spring. Awards of $1,000.00 will be made to students in three disciplinary categories: natural and physical sciences including mathematics and engineering; social and behavioral sciences; and the humanities and arts. Criteria 1. Must be an FSU degree-seeking graduate or professional student in good academic standing; 2. Must show evidence of outstanding scholarly/creative productivity as a graduate/professional student at FSU; if the effort is part of a team the nomination materials must clearly delineate the contributions of the applicant; 3. Must show evidence of national visibility in research/creative activity (e.g., publications, presentations, juried exhibits or performances). This could also include evidence of recognition and honors in endeavors related to the research and/or creative activities. 4. Winners of the award will be required to complete and submit three-minute videos showcasing their research/creative endeavors for the Graduate School?s GradWorld FSU website. Instructions will be provided to the award winners. Nomination/Application Process Students interested in applying for this award should make their interest known to faculty who can write letters of nomination and support. Additionally, faculty are asked to identify and encourage students to prepare application materials that will be submitted online using the FSU Dropbox. Application materials for the Graduate Student Research and Creativity Award are as follows: 1. A brief cover letter from the nominee that clearly states in which disciplinary category the nominee wishes to be considered (at the discretion of the reviewers, any question regarding the disciplinary category will be discussed and resolved by the reviewers, the Dean of the Graduate School and the faculty member who nominated the student); 2. A letter of recommendation/nomination from a Florida State University faculty member (e.g., major advisor) or administrator that addresses the selection criteria above; 3. No more than two (2) additional letters in support of the nomination from FSU faculty; 4. A clear, complete and non-technical description (not more than three pages and written by the nominee) of the program of research or creative activities accomplished as a graduate/professional student at Florida State University; 5. The nominee's vitae including grants, awards, publications, performances, exhibitions (e.g., dates, locations, page numbers, co-authorship, publication status). Indicate with an asterisk (or by some other means) those publications, exhibitions or presentations that were selected through a formal independent referee or competitive process; 6. Letter of endorsement from the departmental chair or dean (PLEASE SEE SELECTION SECTION BELOW). 7. All application materials should be scanned and saved as one PDF document. Preparation and submission of the application materials is the responsibility of the nominee, but departments and colleges may (and are encouraged to) provide assistance. Arts and Humanities graduate students may also provide a portfolio of their work, if applicable. Selection The number of nominations each department or college (if no departmental subunits) may submit for the Graduate Student Research and Creativity Awards will be based upon its number of graduate students. Departments or colleges with under 100 graduate students may nominate one candidate; departments or colleges with 100 ? 200 graduate students may nominate a maximum of two candidates; and departments or colleges with over 200 graduate students may nominate a maximum of three candidates. Letters of support and the endorsement letter (described in item #6 above) do not need to be placed in sealed envelopes, for the nominee will upload scanned copies with other required materials to the FSU Dropbox (instructions follow). Discipline-specific committees (natural and physical sciences including mathematics and engineering; social and behavioral sciences; and the humanities and arts) of faculty appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School will review and score the nominee materials. The Dean of the Graduate School will select the Research and Creativity Awards winners based on the final scores submitted by the three award selection committees. Award notifications are sent out to all applicants in March. Winners will be recognized at the spring Celebration of Graduate Student Excellence ceremony scheduled in April, 2020. The purpose of this program is to recognize faculty mentors whose dedication to graduate students and commitment to excellence in graduate education and mentoring have made a significant contribution to the quality of life and professional development of graduate students at Florida State University. Noted in the Council of Graduate Schools A Conversation About Mentoring: Trends and Models "Mentoring is distinct from advising.... It involves professors acting as close, trusted and experienced colleagues and guides....It recognizes that part of what is learned in graduate school is not cognitive; it is socialization to the values, norms, practices, and attitudes of a discipline and university; it transforms the student into a colleague. It produces growth and opportunity for both the mentor and the student." Awards will be presented at the Faculty Awards Ceremony held in Spring 2020 and will include a $3,000 award* for each faculty mentor winner. Awards will be given for up to five individual mentors of master?s and/or doctoral students. We are asking that nominations be submitted to and reviewed by the appropriate academic dean?s office to determine whether the nominee is eligible to receive the award. The next steps may then be carried out by the academic dean?s office or at the department level: The faculty member will be notified of his/her nomination and may obtain assistance in putting together a binder that includes the following supporting material: current vita, list of graduate courses taught over the past five years (2015-2019), graduate level teaching SPCI/SPOT summary evaluation forms over the past five years, theses and dissertation committee supervision over the past five years, statement on graduate mentoring, and a maximum of three support letters. These support letters should be divided as follows: two letters from either a single student, a group of students, alumni or student organization, and one letter of recommendation from either, staff, faculty, department chair, or academic dean. If the binders are put together at the department level, they must then be forwarded to the appropriate dean. Academic deans will then forward complete application packets electronically to The Graduate School at a.jarvis at fsu.edu via FSU Dropbox for review by a faculty committee selected from members of the Graduate Policy Committee. Additionally, you will want to check with your Dean?s office to see if they require additional documentation or have an earlier deadline for submission to their office. Attached is an overview of the Graduate Faculty Mentor Award program, including the eligibility requirements, criteria, and a description of the procedure used to review the nominees. In addition, attached is a nomination form for distribution to interested parties. Nomination forms may also be found on The Graduate School's website (https://gradschool.fsu.edu/funding-awards/graduate-school-awards/faculty-awards). The deadline for the submission of nominations to the academic dean?s office is January 25th. Check with you dean?s office regarding its deadline for receipt of completed binders. The deadline for these application packets to be received in The Graduate School office from the academic deans is February 15th. NOTE: If due date falls on a weekend or holiday, departments can submit applications on the first workday following the deadline. Student Art Awards Deadline Jan 27 Message-ID: You can?t win it if you?re not in it! Spring 2020 Art Student Awards Application Deadline: January 27 @ 11:59pm To apply, go to https://fsu.academicworks.com/ More info at: https://art.fsu.edu/opportunities/scholarships-grants/department-of-art-student-awards/ Tips: - Make sure you are using Firefox or Chrome browsers when applying - After login, fill out the General Application first, and then select College of Fine Arts/Dept of Art Application and complete the art portion as outlined below. Both parts of the application must be completed to be considered for an award. If any boxes are left blank, the system will not allow you to submit. Preparing your Art Award application ? make it great! Here?s how: 1. Develop a concise yet compelling artist?s statement between 150 and 300 words in length. Start with a brief biographical statement, followed by a description of the ideas that drive your work. SPECIAL NOTE for Undergraduates: If you wish to be considered for an Ann Kirn Scholarship (a $1000 award limited to undergraduate students), you must include a thoughtful description of the role that design plays in your studio practice. 2. Select the five (5) to eight (8) images that best represent your studio work. Be sure that your images are photographed well and cropped as needed. File sizes should be less than 2MB. A video will be considered as one image. Submit your video to Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link within your application. A balance between breadth and depth is ideal. If no two images are related in any way, your submission can appear unfocused. If all of the images are extremely similar, you can come across as short on imagination. Most importantly, be sure all of the images presented are your very best. It is better to submit six great images than to submit six great ones and two weak ones. 3. Write a brief description of each image and provide the title, size, medium, and date completed. This is a great opportunity to build on the general comments from your Artist?s Statement through specific information about each image. SPECIAL NOTE: The application as a whole may evolve over several days and is likely to take many hours to complete. Putting the necessary time and thought into it will greatly improve your chances of success. Furthermore, once you have laid the groundwork with this application, you will be better prepared for future applications for awards on or off campus. A sample application is also included at the webpage noted above. Questions? For example, https://www.notapplicable.com if required to use the internet address format. - Although it suggests that video is optional, you still need to enter something into the blank. If you are not submitting video, enter https://www.notapplicable.com Thank you for your patience. We are using a new system this year and are still working out the kinks. She is currently working with Dr. Amber Ward, Art Ed?s visiting assistant professor. Dr. Amber Ward has a performance coming up on February 6th and Egda is looking for possible graduate students from the Fine Arts department who would like to participate as photographers of the event. The activity is February 6th from 5-6:30pm and they would need the student/photographer present for that time in order to document the different things happening. If possible, even filming some part of it. If you are interested or have any other questions about this event please reach out to Egda Claudio (emc18h at my.fsu.edu) or Dr. Ward (award2 at fsu.edu). DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 20, 2020. This annual event is a special combination award & year-long exhibition of your work at the beautiful Honors Scholar?s and Fellows House on the FSU campus. This high-traffic building is a great way to showcase what you have made and what it is about to a broad group of students, parent, faculty and general visitors. This award is different and separate from the Art Department Awards. It has a different application. You CAN apply for this award even if you have also applied for the Art Department student awards. The main difference is that this is a juried exhibition in a public place (so there are specific criteria and limitations placed on what can and can not be shown) and there is a required artists?s statement that is really a description of work. Essentially we are looking for high quality works of art that clearly show excellence in visual arts but, in addition, the artist?s statement will be assessed for its success in conveying to the judges (and a broad, general audience) why the artist was moved to create the piece, what the artist is trying to convey to the viewer and how successful the statement was in creating a deeper understanding and connection to the specific work presented. Consider the combination of the art work and the statement about the work to be a type of visual ?Three Minute Thesis? combo?. bringing to life what the artwork is about. In the statement, we are looking for the ?so what factor.? Questions to consider addressing are: What is this?; Why does this piece matter?; Why is it important?; What is the connection to your field of study and what broader connections can one see in the work?, etc. In addition, if selected to be in the exhibition (as a finalist for an award), you agree to have your work hung in the HSF House for a full year (March 2020-March 2021). I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU VISIT THE CURRENT SHOWS at the HSF House which is located across Landis Green (above the Chick-fil-A). Look at the space layout (and constraints), the selected works and read the statements to get a better idea of what to apply with. The exhibitions are on the 2 & 3rd floors student lounge spaces on those floors.
