I had originally contacted a few people that were selected by faculty, plus some additional students that I know would benefit from a visit - I have not received a reply from anyone I contacted. As it stands, only ONE student (out of 25) from all three years of the program is currently signed up for a studio visit - this is an embarrassment and a poor reflection on the department and the efforts made to bring artists to our school. Either you're uninterested, or the word is just not getting out to you. There are SIX slots available - I need at least five filled. This is for your benefit - the more you talk about your work, the more you'll understand it for yourself. I know some of you are traveling or out of town, but the rest need to see this for the opportunity it is. I'm reaching out to make you aware of an item on the agenda for the upcoming Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tues., Feb. 25 at 3pm (tomorrow). It is agenda item 12, titled "Alternative Structures for Administration of Cultural Programming." To summarize, there is the possibility that COCA's administration of cultural programming would be transitioned to the County's Division of Tourism (Visit Tallahassee). If you feel moved to do so, please express your thoughts to our Commissioners. If you've found COCA to be a valuable resource, please let the Commissioners know. If COCA is absorbed into Visit Tallahassee, it is unlikely they would be able to function or exist in any recognizable form. More than that, many of the organizations in our cultural community would go unfunded too, unless their work has a significant tourism impact. This isn't just about COCA, it's about the WHOLE community. Take care, Tenee?
