Some of you made us aware of your plans to be remote (either not in Tallahassee or by staying off-campus) a while ago (which I much appreciate). Others have very recently let us know of your intentions to embrace a remote status. This is a discussion you should have had with me and our Chair, Lilian Garcia-Roig, beforehand, and definitely before now. While I support your decision, please understand that this late notification involves rearranging schedules for many other grads and a recalibration of GA positions based on your now remote status. The broader conversation here involves clear communication that will enable the MFA program to move forward in the best ways possible. If you ever need to reach out, do not hesitate to do so - complicated situations can be averted by addressing issues as they come up rather than letting them fester, or being blind-sided by surprises. To this end, I would like to bring back a device that Lillian used during her time as MFA Director - a suggestion-box that would be an anonymous way for anyone to air their thoughts, grievances, or ideas (I'll make it big). Paper and pen are all that will be used - no digital, no forms, no internet, no doodle polls, and I'll let you know where it'll be located when it's ready. To bring these ideas and concerns to the forefront, I will be initiating a monthly informal meeting, during which you can be brought up to date on what's going on in the department while having a forum addressing any issues. These meetings would be via zoom, and details will be forthcoming. I am here to make your time at FSU as productive and meaningful as possible, and I can only do that if we have an ongoing and productive dialogue. Once again, I hope you're all well, and I'm looking forward to this and future semesters! (Deadline is Monday, August 17th) In-Reply-To: References: , , , Message-ID: Hi everyone, Here's a wonderful opportunity for any of you to apply for an undergrad research assistant. This would be an undergrad who has been accepted to FSU's Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). I'm not convinced that this would be beneficial to a 1st-year grad, but you are still welcome to apply. Read up on it here and consider whether this would be beneficial to you and them. Basically, the process is this: ? You submit a proposal ? UROP students look at all the proposals from across the university and apply for one's that are of interest. ? They will most likely NOT be art students ? You are not obligated to work with any of them if you think they are not a good fit. Be realistic: Consider the amount of work on your part required to keep a UROP student engaged for 5-10 hours a week. What is it you need from them? They are required to present an overview of what they did during their time with you, so "sweep my studio" or "run and get me a coffee and three bagels" is not an option. Read over past proposals on the UROP site. During the spring semester there is usually some money for materials available for those taking on students. It's never guaranteed (especially nowadays). The message about the building hours for Strozier and Dirac Libraries was posted before I had a chance to sent this to you but I am sending this to you for your information. * Strozier Library will open the week of 8/17 and hours for that week are 8am - 5pm, Monday ?Friday. * Starting on Sunday, August 23rd the hours for fall are: * Strozier - Sunday through Friday * Dirac - Sunday through Thursday * Sunday: 10am-6pm (both buildings) * Monday-Thursday: 8am-8pm(both buildings) * Friday: 8am-6pm (Just Strozier) * Saturday - Both buildings closed based on past usage data (Virtual Reference Service available) The Libraries will not resume the Library Express Delivery Service until we can better establish which departmental offices will be open. We will also need to clarify pick-up locations for faculty. Until then, we will continue to offer curbside delivery. We believe this is safer and more dependable for everyone. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I will be out tomorrow (Friday) but will respond to email over the weekend. Jean Phillips will attend tomorrow?s meeting in my place. To do this, students will need to follow Strozier building protocols (which are clearly posted on the web and in person), but nothing specific has changed regarding printing. Thank you all for taking part in last night's slideshow - given the situation and obstacles we're all facing, I think it went great and gave me many ideas for future events. The students loved seeing the work of their faculty and I was so impressed with the 1st-year's presentations under what can only be described as "different and difficult" conditions. As always, a special and heartfelt thank-you goes out to Tenee' Hart who, along with all her other duties, wrangled, cajoled, pushed, and organized to make things happen with patience and grace. I've included a few pics of the event below I'm excited about the upcoming semester, and the fact that so many are rising to the challenges we all face!
