SEASON 16 OPPORTUNITIES DIGEST | SEPTEMBER 2019 #1
NEW SEASON! FALL CALLS
[ 5 open artist opportunities included below ]
Thank you for being a part of our community! Please feel free to share these opportunities. All current and near-term upcoming exhibits and projects at Manifest can also be found listed online at https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.manifestgallery.org/projects__;!5Xm4_O-4tfk!hGDBbjkSwjM8j5tZ_lbpVPTt4QZ5xEWJgWPXlqq-z-sGVrUNGWdu53QenLIgUzmsmrwNobEW$
REDUCED FEES: With our peers in mind for Season 16 we have adjusted our exhibition entry fee structure, reducing the average fee to submit per-work by 25%, and reducing the fee to submit additional works beyond four by 50% per work. Sixteen years ago the cost per work to submit to a Manifest exhibit was $10. In season 16 it will be... $10. Based on a 3% cost of living increase annually, the same $10 should be $15.50 today.
________________________________
EVERY SEASON INCLUDES A $2500 ANNUAL JURY PRIZE
The Manifest Grand Jury Prize allows for the awarding of one $2500 prize to a single work selected as the 'best of the entire season'. Winner will be determined by an end-of-year jury from among a pool of all top-scoring works from each gallery exhibit's jury process across the current exhibition season. Details on the Manifest Grand Jury Prize can be found at https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.manifestgallery.org/about/awards/grand_jury_prize__;!5Xm4_O-4tfk!hGDBbjkSwjM8j5tZ_lbpVPTt4QZ5xEWJgWPXlqq-z-sGVrUNGWdu53QenLIgUzmsmvDjguH6$ .

TRANSCENDENCE
An International Call for Works About Going
Beyond the Normal
tran·scend
/tran(t)ˈsend/ verb: be or go beyond the range or limits of (something abstract, typically a conceptual field or division).
surpass (a person or achievement). synonyms: go beyond, rise above, cut across
tran·scend·ence
/tran(t)ˈsendəns/ noun: existence or experience beyond the normal or physical level. synonyms:superiority, supremacy, predominance, preeminence, ascendancy; incomparability, matchlessness, peerlessness; excellence, greatness, magnificence, sublimity, importance
Something many artists strive for in their work throughout their careers—a going beyond ordinary. But what about work that addresses the idea of Transcendence as a subject, rather than an aspect of the ambition, dedication, and rigor of the artist themselves? How does visual art represent, either through subject, form, or content, a notion which, in some form or another, underlies much of human introspection and civilized activity since our earliest days as a species? Manifest invites artists to submit works which in some way address the theme of Transcendence. Artists are encouraged to take a broadly creative view of the theme.

LIGHT
Calling for Works About Illumination, Exposure, and Brightness
“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” ― Plato
We open our eyes to it, are born into it. So much relies on what it reveals and gives. From vision of the world around us to messages sent through fiber optics, from starlight to the sunlight without which life on Earth would not be possible, light is life, awareness, and information. Manifest invites artists to submit works which in some way address the theme of Light. Artists are encouraged to take a broadly creative view of the theme.

DARK
An International Call for Works About Shadows, Nocturnes, Nightscapes, and Darkness
“Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.” ― Anne Frank
We close our eyes to it, are born out of it. So much hides within it, and disappears—even us. Under our beds, in the deepest of woods, past the furthest reaches of the Universe, there lurks the dark. It is the unknown, the opposite of light—the impossible paradoxical weight reciprocal to the speed of light itself. Darkness saturates existence, gifting the insight brought by contrast. Therefore, perhaps, it somehow serves as a source for happiness and even light itself. Manifest invites artists to submit works which in some way address the theme of Dark.

TAPPED
10th Annual Exhibit of Paired Works by Artists and Their Current/Former Teachers
Please Note - this is NOT a call for collaborative works.
TAPPED will feature works made by distinct individuals, paired side-by-side.
Celebrating A Decade of TAPPED!
The relationship between artists and their current or former instructors can be a powerful one. Even when this bond is left unstated, we carry our professors' voices forward in time as we mature as artists and people. We eventually realize that the instruction given by our teachers during our relatively brief careers as students continues to expand within us. We realize that the learning they inspired (or insisted upon) is a chain-reaction process that develops across our lifetime. All of us who have been students carry forward our teachers' legacy in one form or another. And those who are, or have been teachers, bear witness to the potency of studenthood.
Most working artists have been a student at some point in time. Most have reached where they are because of this.
Out of respect for this artist-teacher bond, and in honor of instructors working hard to help artists tap into a higher mind relative to art and life, we offer TAPPED every year, an annual exhibit that presents paired works by current or former artist/teacher pairs. With this exhibition Manifest will celebrate a full decade of showing and documenting these important connections in the form of wonderful visual art.
* It is important to note that this project is open to CURRENT or PAST professor/student pairs. The 'student' half of the pair may be a college freshman, a retired veteran, or at any stage in between. Likewise, the instructor half of the pair may be currently or no longer teaching. The sole criteria for the pairing is that the relationship between the two was a formal teacher/student one at some point in time.

season 16 poster linked above
Each season Manifest sends an opportunities poster like this one to over 400 academic institutions across the U.S. Our new Season 16 poster is linked above. It includes all Manifest artist opportunities for the coming season through August 2020.
This poster gets pinned on information boards, studio walls, art centers' info boards, and professors' office doors. It lists a full season of opportunities for professional, developing, academic, and student artists to participate in Manifest's peer-juried exhibits, publications, and artist residency programs.
An 18" x 24" poster like the one linked here is mailed out to about 400 colleges, universities, and art centers every year in late summer. If you are an instructor or administrator at an academic institution with an art program, and do not usually see our posters at your institution, please email us at info at manifestgallery.org with your name, school mailing address, and the name of the institution you represent. We'll add you to our list if your school is not already on it.

The image above links to a medium-resolution printable full-size image of this season's poster, featuring a drawing by Timothy Jahn (featured in our PHOTO REALexhibition in 2016). Feel free to print, post, and share this with your colleagues, friends, and students. Remember, Manifest was founded by, and continues to be operated by professors and students—by artists, for artists.

MEA season 10 available now! Purchases of the book support Manifest's future!
Manifest has always, and continues to document every work shown at the gallery in our full color exhibition publications and catalogs. This is yet another way the organization adds meaning and lasting value to each of its many non-profit exhibition projects, creating lasting value for the public, and those who participate.
Expanding the geographic reach of our physical exhibition program has always been an important part of what we do. Starting with our 10th season Manifest committed to making a single large-format hardcover season ‘anthology’, rather thansmall softcover per-exhibit catalogs<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.manifestgallery.org/manifestpress/catalogs/__;!5Xm4_O-4tfk!hGDBbjkSwjM8j5tZ_lbpVPTt4QZ5xEWJgWPXlqq-z-sGVrUNGWdu53QenLIgUzmsmqIan6IS$ > as we’d done for our first nine years. Every work exhibited in our galleries across a season will now be published in the corresponding large-format hardcover book. We believe the Manifest Exhibition Annual (MEA) will be a more fitting celebration and documentation of the works we present in our five galleries across each season. We also believe it will be more meaningful to the exhibiting artists(of which there are 273 in the season 10 book alone) to have their work encapsulated alongside that of so many others from around the world in a seriously hefty hardbound book.
Every book sold supports future printings of the MEA as well as Manifest's nonprofit educational programming and artist residency. The very limited edition MEA for season 10 (the first one out of the printer!) is available NOW!
