From tahart at fsu.edu Mon Sep 2 19:35:12 2019 From: tahart at fsu.edu (Tenee Hart) Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2019 23:35:12 +0000 Subject: [Art-mfastudio] FSU|MFA + Art Basel Message-ID: [cid:ef786e68-407e-4ebd-9b92-e58f1bcb46e8] Hello - Hello - Hello! I hope that this message finds everyone in good spirits and having a fun-filled Labor Day weekend. I am contacting you all in regards to our 2019 trip to Art Basel in Miami Beach. As many of you are aware, our funding for this trip has been limited in the past. Which is why we are going to be meeting with the College of Fine Arts Dean, James Frazier, this Friday, September 6th. We want to make a case for more funding and we need your help! First things first, we need a solid head count. So, if you are committed to going to Art Basel this year - we need to know! The dates for our Art Basel travel will be Wednesday, December 4th - Sunday, December 8th. These dates tend to conflict with the usual end of semester duties, whether TA or GTA duties, so you would potentially need to work the needs of your assistantship out with your area heads. [cid:47fc998c-94d4-456b-a7e9-b34d91dc7c94][cid:51c375cd-6c6b-46a8-96a8-7e66e09342ab][cid:baa13408-8f94-4e5f-b3f5-0b2d290a26d0] With that being said, if you are interested in going providing us with a brief proposal of why this trip would be influential/crucial to your practice would be very much appreciated. Having supporting materials like this will only solidify our need for this funding. Ideally, we would need these proposals by Wednesday, September 4th by 11:59pm in order for us to have time to compile and prepare the case for the Dean. I have gone ahead and created a template for you to use for your proposal - you are more than welcome to use whatever format you wish but I thought this might make it easier for everyone. Proposal Template link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZyEi2k8cWuLNHH3S7C8-RdnQA9KAex1szXRy3kRysrs/edit?usp=sharing Please make sure to just copy or download the google template in order to create your own on a separate document - this way we don't lose the original. If you need extra time to complete your proposal, just let me know so that I can anticipate its' lateness. As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this trip or the proposal process and I will be happy to answer them. Thanks in advance for helping us and hopefully **fingers crossed** making these funding dreams happen!!! Take care, Tenee' Tenee? Sixteen years ago the cost per work to submit to a Manifest exhibit was $10. In season 16 it will be... $10. Based on a 3% cost of living increase annually, the same $10 should be $15.50 today. ________________________________ EVERY SEASON INCLUDES A $2500 ANNUAL JURY PRIZE The Manifest Grand Jury Prize allows for the awarding of one $2500 prize to a single work selected as the 'best of the entire season'. Winner will be determined by an end-of-year jury from among a pool of all top-scoring works from each gallery exhibit's jury process across the current exhibition season. TAPPED will feature works made by distinct individuals, paired side-by-side. Celebrating A Decade of TAPPED! The relationship between artists and their current or former instructors can be a powerful one. Even when this bond is left unstated, we carry our professors' voices forward in time as we mature as artists and people. We eventually realize that the instruction given by our teachers during our relatively brief careers as students continues to expand within us. We realize that the learning they inspired (or insisted upon) is a chain-reaction process that develops across our lifetime. All of us who have been students carry forward our teachers' legacy in one form or another. And those who are, or have been teachers, bear witness to the potency of studenthood. Most working artists have been a student at some point in time. Most have reached where they are because of this. Out of respect for this artist-teacher bond, and in honor of instructors working hard to help artists tap into a higher mind relative to art and life, we offer TAPPED every year, an annual exhibit that presents paired works by current or former artist/teacher pairs. With this exhibition Manifest will celebrate a full decade of showing and documenting these important connections in the form of wonderful visual art. * It is important to note that this project is open to CURRENT or PAST professor/student pairs. The 'student' half of the pair may be a college freshman, a retired veteran, or at any stage in between. Likewise, the instructor half of the pair may be currently or no longer teaching. The sole criteria for the pairing is that the relationship between the two was a formal teacher/student one at some point in time. This is yet another way the organization adds meaning and lasting value to each of its many non-profit exhibition projects, creating lasting value for the public, and those who participate. Expanding the geographic reach of our physical exhibition program has always been an important part of what we do. Starting with our 10th season Manifest committed to making a single large-format hardcover season ?anthology?, rather thansmall softcover per-exhibit catalogs as we?d done for our first nine years. Every work exhibited in our galleries across a season will now be published in the corresponding large-format hardcover book. We believe the Manifest Exhibition Annual (MEA) will be a more fitting celebration and documentation of the works we present in our five galleries across each season. We also believe it will be more meaningful to the exhibiting artists(of which there are 273 in the season 10 book alone) to have their work encapsulated alongside that of so many others from around the world in a seriously hefty hardbound book. Every book sold supports future printings of the MEA as well as Manifest's nonprofit educational programming and artist residency. I temporarily transform places through actions that create a confounding spectacle in order to question routine patterns and social norms. Designed to invite audience participation, I want my objects and projects to challenge users to engage in a civic dialogue about individual, community, and place. Outdoor projects are situated in urban and rural landscapes in order to question human relationships with the natural world. I am particularly interested in exploring transitional post-industrial spaces where growth and decay are happening simultaneously. My recent work explores the impact that extractive industries such as mining, oil and gas have on the ecosystems and watersheds of Appalachian landscapes. Coal mining and mountaintop removal are especially compelling subjects for my sculptures and installations. https://art.fsu.edu/56520-2/ | https://jasonsheridanbrown.com/home.html Jason S. I am contacting you guys again in reference to our 2019 Art Basel trip to Miami Beach. If you are interested in going there is still time to provide us with a brief proposal of why this trip would be influential/crucial to your practice. These were originally due yesterday before midnight but I have decided to open it up another day, so you will have until 11:59pm tonight, Thursday, September 5th, to submit your proposal. Remember having these supporting materials solidifies our need for funding to the Dean. I would like to thank those who have already submitted their proposals - they are, honestly, perfection!!! :) As many of you are aware, I created a template for you to use for your proposal - you are more than welcome to use whatever format you wish but I thought this might make it easier for everyone. As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this trip or the proposal process and I will be happy to answer them. Thanks in advance for helping us and hopefully **fingers crossed** making these funding dreams happen!!! Take care, Tenee' Tenee?
