I am contacting you in regards to an installation of cigarette butts in the front of CAB. [Image] It has trickled through the grapevine that a MFA is responsible for this. With that being said, it needs to be taken down immediately. Also, while we are on this topic - do not alter, deface, or affix anything to the Carnaghi Arts Building (or really any FSU owned building for that matter). This is a ?no questions asked? situation - just remove this install and clean the area. I will be coming by CAB later today to check on the status of this removal. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns about this situation and I will be happy to help you. Take care, Tenee? You don?t want to miss this event! Sam Van Aken | Tuesday, December 10 @ 7pm Sam Van Aken is a contemporary artist and Associate Professor of sculpture at Syracuse University who works beyond traditional modes of art making, crossing artistic genres and disciplines to develop new perspectives on such themes as communication, botany, agriculture, climatology, and the ever-increasing impact of technology. Employing ?anti-structures and unknowing as generative processes?, Van Aken?s interventions in the natural and public realm are seen as metaphors that serve as the basis of narrative, sites of place making, and in some cases even become the basis of scientific research. Sam will discuss work and research involving his Tree of 40 Fruit, living art sculptures and specimens that preserve the diversity of the world's heirloom, antique, and native varieties of stone fruit. Employing ?anti-structures and unknowing as generative processes?, Van Aken?s interventions in the natural and public realm are seen as metaphors that serve as the basis of narrative, sites of place making, and in some cases even become the basis of scientific research. Combining public art and environmental preservation, The Open Orchard will be an expansive new artwork by Sam Van Aken on Governors Island that takes the form of an orchard of 50 fruit trees. Each individual tree will contain multiple varieties of peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries and apples that were historically grown in the New York City region over the past 500 years but which have been lost to climate change and the industrialization of agriculture. The Open Orchard brings these native and heirloom varieties back as living trees and shares them with the public, giving everyone a chance to see and taste fruits that, in some cases, haven?t been available for centuries. At the same time, the orchard will serve as a living gene bank, safeguarding biodiversity for future generations. Spring 2020 Art Student Awards Message-ID: <9DEB13D7-0F1F-4B56-8C1D-4470E3907CCC@fsu.edu> Announcing the Spring 2020 Art Student Awards Save the Dates: - Art Student Awards Application Deadline: January 27 @ 11:59pm - Workshop for BA/BFA/MFAs: "How to Document your Artwork" January 10 @ 1pm at the CAB lighting studio, LightBox - Excellence in Visual Arts Exhibition Awards will have a separate application portal that will be posted art.fsu.edu ? coming soon! Dear Students, The FSU Department of Art announces the 2020 Art Student Awards. These awards recognize the strength of our students and that means YOU! The Department of Art gives a number of awards to Studio Art students whose work demonstrates exceptional achievement. This spring, the department will offer 33 awards ranging from $250 to $1000. To apply, go to https://fsu.academicworks.com/ After login, fill out the General Application first, and then select College of Fine Arts/Dept of Art Application and complete the art portion as outlined below. Both parts of the application must be completed to be considered for an award. Application deadline January 27 at 11:59pm Preparing your Art Award application ? make it great! Here?s how: 1. Develop a concise yet compelling artist?s statement between 150 and 300 words in length. Start with a brief biographical statement, followed by a description of the ideas that drive your work. SPECIAL NOTE for Undergraduates: If you wish to be considered for an Ann Kirn Scholarship (a $1000 award limited to undergraduate students), you must include a thoughtful description of the role that design plays in your studio practice. 2. Select the five (5) to eight (8) images that best represent your studio work. Be sure that your images are photographed well and cropped as needed. File sizes should be less than 2MB. A video will be considered as one image. Submit your video to Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link within your application. A balance between breadth and depth is ideal. If no two images are related in any way, your submission can appear unfocused. If all of the images are extremely similar, you can come across as short on imagination. Most importantly, be sure all of the images presented are your very best. It is better to submit six great images than to submit six great ones and two weak ones. Learn how to make your images their best ? Workshop for BA/BFA/MFAs: "How to Document your Artwork? January 10 @ 1pm at the CAB lighting studio, LightBox 3. Write a brief description of each image and provide the title, size, medium, and date completed. This is a great opportunity to build on the general comments from your Artist?s Statement through specific information about each image. SPECIAL NOTE: The application as a whole may evolve over several days and is likely to take many hours to complete. Putting the necessary time and thought into it will greatly improve your chances of success. Furthermore, once you have laid the groundwork with this application, you will be better prepared for future applications for awards on or off campus. A sample application is also included at the webpage noted above. Questions? I hope that this message finds everyone enjoying their winter break and preparing for the new year. With the Spring semester fast approaching, I thought that I would share an opportunity that came into my inbox - deferred tuition and fees offer. For several semesters Student Business Services has offered Graduate Teaching Assistants, Graduate Research Assistants, and other Graduate Assistants with an HR appointment, the opportunity to defer their tuition and fee payment from the standard payment deadline to the end of the term. For Spring 2020, this will mean that the due date for tuition and fees will shift from January 17 to May 1. Further, should you want, Student Business Services offers the opportunity to have the remainder of your tuition and fee balance deducted from your bi-weekly paycheck each pay period over the term. While Student Business Services offer the extension of the due date to any graduate student with an appointment, the payroll deduction process is optional. You can read more about the plan on our website, along with our traditional payment plan for non-HR appointed graduate students: https://studentbusiness.fsu.edu/how-pay/payment-plans. Student Business Services see an average adoption of around 700 students per term who elect to defer their tuition and fees, of which 500 students opt-in to payroll deductions. Graduate Assistant Tuition Plan online form, link: https://fla.st/2rMqTzt If you have any questions about this payment plan or student accounts in general, don?t hesitate to reach out to Gil (Gilman Page | Student Business Services Program Director).
