From mfielding at fsu.edu Tue Oct 6 10:48:37 2026 From: mfielding at fsu.edu (Marty Fielding) Date: Tue, 6 Oct 2026 14:48:37 +0000 Subject: [Art-instructors] Visiting Artist Workshop in Ceramics Monday 10/12 Message-ID: Good Morning Artists, Please join the Ceramics Area for a Visiting Artist Workshop with Rob Kolhouse on Monday October 12. The workshop is funded by Clay Club of FSU fundraising efforts. Thanks to all for supporting our sales! Rob will be demonstrating techniques he used for building figurative sculpture and discussing the concepts behind his work. Monday October 12 Demonstrations: 9-12:00 and 1:30-5:00 in the ceramics studio Artist Talk: 6:00 in the ceramics crit room All are welcome! [Kolhouse copy.jpg] Bio: Rob Kolhouse received his BFA from Indiana University and his MFA from University of Florida. Influenced by Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto and the cyberpunk classic Ghost in the Shell, his sculptures investigate the intersection of art and technology using the cyborg as a metaphor. His work has appeared in high profile juried shows such as the annual NCECA National Juried Exhibition, Archie Bray?s Beyond the Brickyard, and at the Philadelphia Clay Studio. Internationally, he has shown at Guldagergaard in Demark as well as in exhibitions in France and Canada. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Florida Atlantic University. Artist Statement: My work is heavily influenced by the cartoons, video games, and comic books I loved as a child. Growing up as a bi-racial kid in the 1980s was often difficult, and I escaped into these worlds of sci-fi and fantasy. As an adult, living in a world where video games and social media allow us to imagine and create alternative versions of ourselves, I find the image of the cyborg, an amalgam of flesh and machine, a timely metaphor for the relationship between the human body and our ever-advancing technology. Drawing on the aesthetics of fantasy worlds that sparked my imagination as a child, I explore the intersection of identity, technology, and the body. I hope to see you on Monday! See the attached photo. If you happen to see it somewhere at FAB or CAB, please let me know. I haven't seen it in a couple years and I think the last time it was used was during the flurry of activity in the fablab around biomaterials. I used to store it in my office until it was needed, but now I'm afraid it's disappeared into the wild. Thanks for any help. This means we need to drive two minivans. I will drive one, but we need a driver for the second one. Free morning donuts and no student/teaching responsibilities - just free admission to the zoo and time to stroll around looking at the animals (the new manatee exhibit is amazing). Unfortunately, I think space will be tight and we won't be accomodate any +1's. Another detail is that you will have to use your credit card for the $75 rental (not fuel though) and get reimbursed by FSU - not a big deal but I wanted to mention it. Please let me know asap if you are able to do it. Thank you!!!
