From mivory at fsu.edu Tue Jan 6 08:58:43 2026 From: mivory at fsu.edu (Celeste Ivory) Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2026 13:58:43 +0000 Subject: [Art-instructors] Welcome Back + Start of Semester Reminders In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Dear All, Good morning and Happy New Year! Please see the 'welcome back + start of the semester reminders' email below from Dr. Sara Scott Shields. Kind regards, Celeste Celeste Ivory, MFA Program Manager + Adjunct Professor | Department of Art | College of Fine Arts | Florida State University Fine Arts Building 220 | 530 W. Call Street | Tallahassee, FL 32306-1150 850.644.3147 | mivory at fsu.edu ----------------------- Dear College of Fine Arts Faculty, Welcome back and best wishes for the start of the spring semester. I don't know about you all, but reentry has been a real SLOG for me, so I hope you were able to find some time to rest and recharge over the break. I like to think having a hard time coming back to work means that you took the time you needed to disconnect and renew yourself! As we get ready to welcome students back to our classrooms, I wanted to share a few important reminders and updates to help the semester start smoothly. As usual, please be sure that your course syllabi are posted in Canvas prior to the first day of class. This remains an important part of setting clear expectations for students and ensuring they have access to essential course information from day one. Later this semester access to SimpleSyllabus will open, and you will be asked to enter your syllabus information there as well. SimpleSyllabus is a platform intended to support consistency, accessibility, and institutional reporting. As most of you know, syllabi posting is going to shift with the introduction of SimpleSyllabus this Spring, so look out for additional details, timelines, and guidance once the portal opens. To support this transition, I will also be holding open lab times with hands-on support for anyone who would like help navigating SimpleSyllabus, transferring content, or asking questions about syllabus requirements. A few additional reminders as you prepare for the start of the term on Wednesday: * Please remember the university?s first-day attendance reporting requirement. Accurate attendance reporting is essential for enrollment verification and financial aid compliance. For steps on how to complete this click here. * The first days of class set the tone for the semester. Clear expectations, transparent communication, and a welcoming, kind approach can go a long way in helping students feel supported and ready to engage. * Double-check your Canvas course settings, published content, and course dates so students can easily navigate your course from the start. For help with creating your canvas check out this resource. * Review your course policies around attendance, participation, grading, and academic integrity to ensure they are clear and aligned with your syllabus. Below are a few suggestions based on problems I saw emerge this past Fall: * Attendance - Make explicit how attendance is tracked, what counts as an excused absence, how many absences (if any) impact grades, and how studio, rehearsal, lab, or critique-based absences are handled. * Participation - Clearly define what participation looks like in your course. This might include preparation, engagement in discussion or critique, collaboration, studio work, peer feedback, or online activity. If participation affects grades, explain how it is assessed and how students can succeed. * Grading and feedback - Ensure grading criteria, rubrics, and weighting of assignments are clearly stated and consistent across Canvas, the syllabus, and assignment descriptions. Let students know when and how they can expect feedback and how to ask questions about grades. * Academic integrity - Review expectations around originality, citation, collaboration, use of AI or digital tools, and reuse of prior work. Make sure course-specific expectations are clearly stated and that students know where to find guidance if they are unsure. * If you have students with Incompletes from previous semesters, please review those agreements now. Some Incompletes may be approaching their expiration this term, and early communication with students can help avoid unintended grade changes. * If you have any enrollment, modality, or scheduling concerns, please reach out to your unit leadership so you can work through issues together. Thank you, as always, for the care, creativity, and commitment you bring to your teaching. The work you do in studios, classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and online environments makes a meaningful difference for our students, and I?m grateful to be working alongside you. I'll be on campus Wednesdays and Thursdays starting next week, so please reach out if you need anything!! Wishing you a great start to the semester, and please don?t hesitate to reach out with questions. The University?s mandatory First Day Non-Attendance Drop policy is in effect for the first week of Spring 2026 classes. The use of different delivery methods for Spring 2026 classes does not remove this requirement. Dropping students for first day non-attendance is necessary in order for the university to remain in compliance with Federal Financial Aid regulations (and students expect it). This policy requires all faculty and instructional staff to take attendance at the first class meeting of the semester. This policy is non-discretionary and applies to all classes, regardless of campus, space availability in the class, delivery method, course level, and/or academic unit offering the class. As a reminder, ?attendance? means making contact with the instructor as specified by the instructor at the start of the term. There are a number of ways this contact can be achieved. One way instructors can take first day attendance is via their Canvas course site(s). Please see First Day Attendance in Canvas for more information and options. If you use Canvas to satisfy the first day attendance requirement, please note that you still need to report your first day non-attendance drops as directed below. Methods for reporting and processing non-attendance drops: 1. Faculty ? For now, please continue to go to the following link for instructions and screen shots: How To Use the Attendance Roster Tool. 2. Staff ? For now, please continue to go to the following link for instructions and screen shots: How To Use the Attendance Roster Tool. 3. Email -- Send a message to registrar at admin.fsu.edu. Please include the student's name, EMPLID, the course prefix and number and the class section number. 4. myFSU Mobile -- Check and submit first-day attendance via the mobile version of Faculty Center. Simply download the myFSU Mobile app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play and follow these instructions (for now): How to Submit First Day Attendance via myFSU Mobile. 5th Day Classes and Non-attendance Drops: Once drop/add closes on Monday, 12 January 2026, faculty will still be able to use the attendance tool for their Tuesday (13 January) classes. Please take attendance in any class that meets for the first time on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. Additional Information We are no longer processing administrative cancellation requests on the fifth day of classes. Students that need to drop all of their classes will need to be directed to the Withdrawal Services Office. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They are located in very energetic areas that see a lot of traffic and visitors. Let's keep these spaces active with our department's work! ? Please contact Heather Rushing or me to make a reservation to use. The cases provide opportunities to share a class project, and /or create a resume-building experience with an exhibition. You have the project prompts and the work, so please consider sharing it and activating the halls. If you would like to plan a pop-up exhibition outside of these specific and designated cases, you must have advanced permission. This can be easily accomplished by providing information on your idea and submitting your request in advance. We will then provide your request to those that review space use requests in CFA buildings. Please reach out with your ideas and we will gladly help. ? Through a camera, the image is reborn, a material re-presentation of vision, light acts, matter responds, and the image emerges as an event. The photograph carries what was seen, how it was seen, and by whom. Photographs kept in family albums, found in flea markets, taken in studios, or captured during a walk are acts of mediation in which the image, the substance, the photographer, and the viewer entwine. Re-presented Vision invites viewers into this intermingling of artists and the world, where images are reborn through shared seeing. In this space, looking becomes an act of participation in which meaning is continuously remade.
