While much will remain unknown for another 24-48 hours, many of the spaghetti models anticipate a direct hit to the Big Bend region. Impacts will potentially include heavy rain, localized flooding, high winds, and power outages. While the timing and exact path of the storm will not solidify for 1-2 days, landfall is expected Thursday, with weather likely deteriorating Wednesday night. Do not attempt to travel in the storm. For reliable information, see the National Hurricane Center (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/). They tend to update every six hours, at the AM and PM hours of 5:00 and 11:00. As with all storms, everyone should be hurricane ready, including food, water, cash, medication, pet supplies, children's supplies, etc. For FSU information see: FSU Alert (https://alerts.fsu.edu/, as well as FSU email/social media). Note that the university leadership meets regularly during these situations, including coordination with local schools, local governments, and state entities. As of this time the university remains fully operational and our work and events will continue this week as scheduled. As we have had hurricane-related school closures in F/22 and F/23, I had asked all instructors to plan for the likelihood that we would be impacted this year. Area Heads and Directors should be helpful in determining what this looks like. A few expectations that I have include: 1. We follow all indicated protocols put forward by the university. If campus is shut down, please stay away. 2. Safety takes priority. Stock up on essentials or go ahead and plan an exit strategy. If you do plan on leaving, current models suggest going west is the better option. 1. Many of our facilities have water intrusion issues. Please anticipate these happening again and ensure artwork, equipment, and materials are elevated in areas of likely flooding. 2. Consideration needs to be given to those directly impacted. Our students come from all over the region, and even if we are fortunate enough not to be impacted, it is very likely some of your students and their families will lose homes and businesses. Be good human beings, and accommodate as you are able. 3. We will likely be asked to make up the time and work lost due to storm-related shutdowns. Please be ready for this. Potential solutions include: * coursework students could complete at home * materials that students can access asynchronously * supplemental workshops added once students return 4. What's most important is that we address stated course learning outcomes, which often requires we give up attachments to specific assignments. Covid has taught us all to think creatively around exactly these sorts of issues. Area Heads and Directors should be called upon to help with anything curricular. If you are directly impacted by the storm, please reach out to the Art Office and myself. Important Teaching Resources & Reminders Hey all! As we prepare for the upcoming storm, I want to extend my best wishes for your safety and well-being during this time. Your health and safety are a top priority, and I encourage you to take all necessary precautions. For those of you teaching classes, please remember to enable the FSU Emergency Module in Canvas if you haven?t already done so. Please also forward this to any adjuncts you supervise as they are not on my distribution list. This module serves as a valuable resource for both you and your students in emergency situations and includes important information on staying connected and informed. You can learn about, access and enable the module here: FSU Emergency Module Guide Please also remember to have compassion and empathy for your students after the storm. Many may be facing this weather event alone or without the support of family for the first time, and some may have loved ones in areas deeply impacted by the storm. This can lead to heightened anxiety and challenges in both participating and returning to class. If you have any questions about how to negotiate the return to classes, especially for students dealing with these challenges, please don?t hesitate to reach out after the storm has passed. For those in Tallahassee, you may find the following Emergency Management Services resources helpful to both yourself and your students: * City of Tallahassee Emergency Information: https://www.talgov.com/emergency * Leon County Emergency Information Portal: https://www.leoncountyfl.gov/ei * Florida State University Alerts: https://alerts.fsu.edu/ * Florida Disaster Resources: https://www.floridadisaster.org/ These resources provide updates on weather conditions, shelter locations, power outages, and other critical information during the storm. Still, it is very likely that many of those who stayed are without power and at least a few of you are contending with more serious issues. Please keep me in the loop regarding what you are dealing with, and what you might need in order to get back on your feet. Collectively, we have things like tarps, solar powered lights, power banks, and even perhaps a generator or two. For those with families more deeply impacted by the storm, please let me know that as well. It is likely we can find someone to cover a class or classes, should you need to go to them to help out. Also, as you are able, please check in with your students to see how they are doing. Given the flooding throughout Florida's West Coast and Big Bend regions, I'm sure quite a few have family homes that have been lost. Please be understanding, extend deadlines, and perhaps be open to alternative ways affected students can address required learning outcomes. FSU has provided Canvas resources that are a great start in determining what your initial outreach might look like (you should have all received an email about this), and your Area Heads, Directors, and I can all be consulted should you need help in thinking through what accommodations could look like. Again, I hope you and yours are all doing as well as possible, and my number's below.
